Can anyone tell me how to test my charging system. 8N 6 volt 3 wire generator. Every time I start the tractor I have to polarize the regulator to get it to start charging.

Interal cutt-outt relay in yer squarecan voltage regulator is BADD!!! NOT REPAIRABLE. New squarecan voltage regulator $30, cheap..... ....Dell (and remember to polarize yer NEW voltage regulator)

Thanks Dell. I will try it. I just didn't know what excited the regulator to tell the generator to charge. I was thinking maybe the spinning generator created a voltage to energize the regulator. I know it would have been a 12 volt conversion if the genny was bad.

Basic electrical principals at work here. Once the genny puts out a higher voltage than the battery.. the cutout closes.. yours isn't.. repalce the regulator..

Be careful of where you get a regulator. I have purchased three before I got one that worked. I would go to a New Holland tractor dealer. They may cost a little more but I have never gotten a bad regulator from them.
