Ronny, in answer to your question, most any place will get you an 8 volt battery. Willard, TSC, even some tractor dealerships will sell them. A statement to your question. After a few starts and re-charges, you can check that shiney new 8V and put a meter on it and you'll now have a 4 hole 6 volt, instead of a 3 hole 6 volt. It'll only carry what the charging system can load on it. Question for your question,,, If your pride and joy Corvette was hard to start, would you drop a 24 volt battery in it? Maybe hang a battery box of the bumper and line up 3 12 volts like large trucks do? Nahhhh you'd find out why it starts hard and fix it. By increasing voltage and CCA you may start easier for a while, but you're masking another problem.
I'm sure your buddy meant well, but that advice is just wrong. First fix your problem, then if you want to up the system, there's a guy on here that'll show ya 6 or 8 ways to convert to a full blown 12 volt system 'stead of some wimpy 8 Volt weak sister. Good luck
Ron

Ronny - take it from someone who has taken that advice from a "knowledgable" source - DO NOT DO IT! It fried my $30 regulator, $25 Coil, points, and condensor. I bought new parts, took the 8V battery back for a 6V and it has been fine every since. Like Bruce said, you will never get your genny to keep the battery fully charged anyway.

If you are dead set on putting an 8V battery in, you can find them at Tractor Supply Stores if you have one local, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Good luck,
Dan

An 8v battery might solve your problem for a while; it will also burn up your points & won't ever get fully charged off of a 6v generator unless you screw w/ the v/r. There are lots of reasons why your tractor isn't starting quickly; my suggestion is that you figure that out before you try a "fix" that isn't going to get you much. When is the last time you pulled the battery cables & cleaned all of the connections? Are the cables big as your thumb 1/0 guage, or are they the pencil thin type you have on your car? Have you checked the specific gravity on the battery? These are just a few of the more common reasons for a hard starting N. Get back w/ some answers to these questions, let us know if it is a 2,9 or 8N, 6v or 12v & front or side mount distributor. Lots of folks will be around to help.
