Jeff, I agree with Dell. A K&N would likely be your best bet. There are foam sleeves available from K&N that fit around the filter for use in heavy dust conditions. If you don"t want to spend your money on the sleeve, you could put a piece of old nylon pantyhose around it. It makes a fairly good dust stop.

Here is the best photo I have of an air intake arrangement. It is from a guy by the handle of Mike T in Texas, who posts on this board on occassion. I don't know of the "originality" of it, but I've seen this setup the most on Funk 6's.
It uses the stock air cleaner from the 8N. It uses the stock carburetor from the 226 engine. That "pancake" or "tophat" attachment on the top of the carb is a unique Funk item. I don't know who is reproducing them, but I've heard it was being done. The tube going from the air cleaner to the "pancake / tophat" looks like a stock 8N tube to me that has had one end cut off.
The stock 8N air cleaner has too much resistance for the 226 engine. If you go with this setup, it will work, but work poorly. In addition, the small tubing and the "pancake / tophat" add additional resistance to the air flow. Flathead engines already flow air poorly, add on to that a poor filtration / intake, and you've got a choked up engine.
If you switch to a cylindrical air filter element (K&N is one manufacturer), the top of the air filter will run into the bottom of the hood. Many a Funk 6 hood has been cut up by a person fiddeling with the intake setup.
So the answer is... there's not a good answer. I'm working on this problem now with my Funk 6. I know I don't want the stock 8N air cleaner. I know I don't want a typical aftermarket cylindrical element cleaner. I know I want some sort of air cleaning system.
Got any good suggestions?

i think i'm going to go to a junk yard and look around for something out of a old pinto or even a newer model car and mount it infront of the batery somehow.maybe a flat style that can be changed easily.and use the hole in the side of the hood extension for a pre-cleaner.now i'm just thinking out loud.>.>.//.,,,,:(

If you want originality, the Funks used either the original Ford air cleaner or the huge Donaldson Funk accessory air cleaner (as seen in the link below) which hung off the side of the hood adapter. For the stock Ford air cleaner, a tube was run from the carb right into the air cleaner, using a special "hat" adapter on top of the carb. Somebody at one time was duplicating the carb hats for around $150 each.

Jeff..... ...nice looking effort but unless you are building a trailer queen for jurried concours competition, I'd at least consider the pleated wire gauze K&N airfilters. You can get a 250 page K&N Filter catalog from Hot-Rod parts stores or directly from K&N. And you can pick-n-choose whatcha need to fit yer 6-cylinder engine. This is probably a better deal than trying to find and fit a old oilbath filter or undersized N-Airfilter.

While I'm NOTTA FAN of K&N filters in heavy dusty applications, they are used on off-road Baha racers in the dusty desert, where they are used to promote higher horsepower engines..... ....Dell
