I have a 8n that I"am getting ready to do some restoration to. I"am trying to find out the year. From what I"ve been reading I can see that it has the ealier sreering box, the later clutch adj. raised script letters in the hood and fenders, no proofmeter, front mounted distributer. I"am guessing 47 or 48. what I can"t figure is that it has the big front hubs and the serial number on the left side of the motor goes like this 4-0-1129-A15A.

Ranlee..... .....there are VERY FEW year model changes which are serial number specific to the 4-speed 8N Tractor. Since you already know yer engine is a frontmount distributor, all yer trying to do is ID the INTERCHANGEABLE ENGINE. Iff'n you really have the engine s/n correctly ID'd (1x4 flatspot under the cylinderhead gasket seam with weakly handstamped numbers) My best guess is you have an INDUSTRIAL version of the N-Engine. N-Engines were used for irrigation pumps, electric light generator sets, oilwell pumps, referigators railcars. Hard tellin' but the engine guttz are the same. Some had anglemount magnito ignition but you claim squarecan coil frontmount.

As for having 5-stud widehub front axle vs the usual 6-stud narrowhub. Dunno, hubs are interchangeable. There been rummor that Ford did use some 2N parts on the very first 1000 8N's, but I don't know, and is of academic interest only to the sphincterly challenged..... ....respectfully, Dell

I'm guessing maybe someone had a wreck or a fire or something way back when and they put that baby back together with spare parts that they salvaged from all over. Must have replaced the engine and the front end including front hubs.
