Stewart..... ...yep, classic timeframe for gunked-up ignition SWITCH to heat-up and reduce yer sparkies and cause the engine to back-fire and quit. Will restart after about 1/2hr cool-off. Unfortunately, the N-Ignitionswitch is not as robust as we'd like'm to be. I replace mine 3-times in one summer and then I got gryped and gotta a waterproof 25A marine grade toggle switch. Keys, eh? who need'em?..... ..Dell

Dell,
Keys are also a safty item,
I have a 9 year old at home and would not like to think he could just jump on and hit a button and away he goes. Take out a key; no worrys

If you have children or grandchildren you should teach them to stay away from power equipment. Hard to do , yes, impossible NO!

For the benefit of your tractor and as a safety item, I would hope you shut the gas off each time your done with the tractor. I had a breakin several years ago where my 9N is stored and they attempted to start the tractor after finding the keys inside camp. It wouldn't start because the gas was shut off. State police said I was lucky they couldn't start the tractor because when they do start a vehicle during a breakin they normally drive it right through the buildings. Safe tractoring. Ron

9N's must be different from 8N's I always start mine with the valve closed and then open valve. But maybe it's because i need to rebuild the carb. NOT.

thexpostman, Hi ex. According to the manual there isn't any difference between the 9 and 8 as far as starting. I wonder why do you start it this way and what if any is the advantage? I assume your in the tractor seat when you start it, which is the safe way, then do you get off to open up the gas valve or do you reach down from the seat and open it up? If your tractor is running well after it is started then you turn the gas on, I would think your carb is OK. Just my opinion. Ron
