Hi ...I have had my 52 8n for about 5 years now and thanks to the board have had great success in getting it running/painted etc....Sad to say I have had a penchant for the 861 Powermaster...The 8n has held up well with very lttle care and has done all that I have asked of it even though it does struggle at times....Even with the 6 volt system she turns right over and runs like a reliable top.....I have an chance to purchase a 1958 861 Powermaster diesel that appears to be in great shape all the way around....
There is alot of knowledge and experience on this board and my question is this.....Has anyone had any experience with an 861 diesel and if so can I expect the same reliable performance as my 8n or am I lookin for trouble....I would not be happy with myself if aquired the 861 and had nothing but trouble....I wish I could keep both but the boss says 1 or the other....but not both.....Any opinions greatly appreciated....I did also post on the Ford board but I am more familiar with this board and the knowledge that exists here.....Thanks....Alan

I love my 8n.. but my 660 is a better tractor 100% all around. That 861 diesel is a better tractor than my 660.. etc.

Like allelse.. look it over.. if it is truly in good shape.. go for it.

Alan, My first tractor was an 8N and I put it through many jobs here, I decided I wanted a second one but could not find an 8N in decent shape but I found an 850, I was so impressed with the 850 that I sold the 8N and bought a second 860. You will apprecciate the extra power and live hydraulics and live PTO, and now as time has passed I also have another 8N! I just keep them out of sight of the boss as much as possible.

Dear Alan, I have a 1959 971-D that has serial number 104,000 plus a bit. Anyway mine has the engine balancer that was standard after that serial number. The 1958 model would not have the balancer on it unless someone had it installed. Start the tractor and rev it up to around 1800 rpm and see how it sounds and feels. Does the engine seem to shake or vibrate quite a bit ( no balancer) or is the engine fairly smooth? I like my tractor and enjoy running it. I did want you to know that the early models below the 104,XXX serial no. did not have the balancer and the later ones did. My book shows that they made a kit to change them over , but you had to buy a new Crankshaft with the kit to change it. If the engine is fairly smooth, and the tractor is in good shape, I think you will like it.

Alan: I have a '58 861; gas, however. Have never had anything serious go wrong with it, so parts, while expensive, not an issue... yet. It is in a whole 'nother class of tractor than my 8N and will do major work on a small farm.

powermasters are nice but parts are higher and you'll think you can do a lot moe with them and put them in situations that you'd never put yer N in
