Folks: This is off topic but you people will likely have the answer. My Honda mower, model HR214 is running erratically after winter lay up. It's a surging type of thing, up and down rpm's, and I can see the governor moving the throttle open and closed. It acts the same way when it starts running out of gas. And it won't idle, but it revs up if I choke it. What do you think, govnr problem, dirty carb jet. It was left with gas in the tank all winter. Thanks!

I"m a Honda Engine Dealer and I will tell you what is wrong but you will have to keep it a secret. If the carb bowl does not have crudd in it then you have a stopped up pilot jet. Take out the idle ajust screw (plastic) under it is a plastic piece that holds the pilot jet in place remove the plastic piece and carefully pry out the pilot jet (also plastic). In the bottom of the piece is the jet, the only way I have found to make sure this jet is open is to push a small piece of piano wire through it. I use very small stainless steel fishing wire. Once clean blow out the passage with air, lub the O ring and install jet. I do this about twice a week on Honda engines and believe me it works. tim

I HAVE WORKED ON HONDA POWER EQUIP FOR YEARS AND THE BEST WAY TO FIX YOUR PROBLEM IS TO REMOVE THE CARB AND CLEAN IT. THE CARB IS VERY SIMPLE AND IFYOU ARE CAREFUL WITH THE GASKETS YOU WILL NEED NO PARTS. WHEN YOU GET THE CARB REMOVED TAKE THE BOWL OFF AND IN THE MIDDLE PART OF THE CARB WHERE THE BOLT HOLD THE BOWL ON THERE IS A JET A NOZZLE YOU NEED TO REMOVE. THE JET COMES OUT WITH SCREW DRIVER AND IS BRASS SO USE A GOOD SCREW DRIVER THAT FITS SNUG. SOMETIMES THE JET WILL FALL OUT OTHER TIMES YOU HAVE PUT A LITTLE PRESSURE ON IT THROUGH THE AIR INTAKE TO GET IT OUT, THERE LOT OF LITTLE HOLES THAT CAN COLLECT CRAP, BLOW IT OUT AND BLOW IN EVERY PASSAGE YOU SEE, REASSMABLE AND IT WILL START FIRST PULL LIKE A HONDA SHOULD

randy, i had the same model for years, there is a screen in the top of the fuel shut off valve, if this is full of gunk, it will run just like that, also take the bottom bowl off the carb [10mm] and clean that and the needle and seat, that should solve the problem, eric

You are most likely right..Dirty, clogged jets. Todays gas is murder on small engine and other carbs if left not running for a while...Try running some Seafoam carb cleaner through it before disassembling. I have lucked out several times by just using this and I got by without having to disassemble the carb.. It is really good stuff...let us know how you come out..

I also use MMO but Seafoam appears to be even better than MMO.....I think some Walmarts have it but Napa or Carquest auto parts stores have it for sure....

Sorry to bring back an Off topic post but..... I have a little tiller made by Honda. Harmony. Has a defferent carb than the one on the mower in question but seems to have similar problem. After setting up all winter I replaced the spark plug, oil change, and fuel line. It still does not seem to have the power that it used to. It does sta running with the new pllug but just lacking get up and go. Any of you Hondo guys got secret tip on the little bitty carb?

Most loikely is a diaphragm type carb. which acts like an internal pump. Frequently these lose their elasticity and will not pump properly. Also in thesre tiny carbs the least piece of trash can cause gas flow obstruction...

Thanks for the reply! I took the carb apart and all looks clean and OK. I have ordered a new diaphragm for it and a set of rings as well. Gonna bust her open this weekend and check it out. She just doesn't have the power she used to and then dies after abut a half hour. Then starts up and runs a minute and then shuts down.
Thanks again
