#4 plug strange firing

On my 9N, I was pretty sure that one of the cylinders was not firing, mainly from the sound. I started to disconnect the plug wires one by one to find out which one it was. When I got to #4, I pulled the cap it and it starting firing. Seems that if the cap just loosely sits on top of the plug (maybe even with a bit of gap), the plug fires and engine runs well. What's up with this?

Robert

Robert..... ..not strange at all. An additional "air-gap" makes for HOTTER SPARKIES iff'n yer regular plug gap is fouling. Infact, Champion used to sell a special sparkplug with internal airgap specifically to take advantage of this phenomon. The extra air-gap takes HOTTER SPARKIES to work. Most frontmound squarecan ignition coils only have adequate sparkies at best. The sudden surge of sparkies caused by the external airgap make the internal gap JUMP.

Change ALL your sparkies. AutoLite AL-437's seem to do best..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Thanks all for the info. I knew I was having problems so I ordered new copper plug wires. The wires on there now are carbon. I was just starting to put them on when I noticed this strange behavior. When I saw this, I took it as an excuse to put off installing the new wires :)

I must admit, I'm not looking forward to getting the new wires thru that tube. I am assuming that the best was is to cut the ends off the old wires and pull them out. Then spray silicone spray into the tube and start with #4 and then feed them end from back to front. Same for 3,2 and 1. Will it be tough or easy? Any tricks? Should I salvage the plug rubber caps or leave them bare?

Robert

P.S. This is the old 9N that WillyN fixed up and sold a few years ago. Here's a pic.

Nice looking setup.

I replaced my plug wires about 2 years ago and I cut the end off one of the old ones, taped the new one to it and pulled it through. I would bet that the copper ones you get will be smaller in diameter that the carbon cores that you have on there so evey one should get progressively easier. My new wires had bare ands on them so after they were in place I put the boots and connectors on them. Very easy job actually but armor-all could help.

The last set of solid copper plug wires that I bought (at my local Tractor Supply) were "build-yer-own". They didn"t have ends on them, at all. This way you could run the wires through the loom, then stick the ends on "em...

I bet if you changed the number 4 wire w/ number 3 that number 3 would do the same thing. I'd say you have a short at the end of the wire. Are these copper core wires or carbon core? You really need copper core. And, the OEM wires did not have boots on the plug ends.

I chaned my wires in the winter
and they were very stiff. They pushed
right through. You might put them in the
freezer.
