Can anyone tell me about this Item. I plan to restore and show it. It would be nice to have a story to tell about it.

Thanks,
Steve

From the grill and other little things, it looks like a 42-48 or an "2N" Funk.
But everything I know could be wrong on any given day.
Good luck, Charlie in MO

Thanks for sharing your information. The Upper picture on the document you posted seems to be what I have less the chassis and wheels. If I can gather enough details I could likely make the cart.

I'm not as good at noticing the fine details like the others, but I don notice that there is no air cleaner grille in the hood side. It looks more like a 9N/2N type hood from that aspect. Also, I don't think I see any Ford script on the hood up toward the front. Was that a later embellishment? I thought even the 9N/2N hoods had Ford script.

It's definately a 9/2 hood. No intake and the holes for the Ferguson system badge are evident.

I know that Funk during that time period made PTO adapters and gearboxes for Ford stationary power units, such as for irrigation, corn shellers, etc. And I've seen front engine mounts (and I think a pan) like that on a N combine engine, though it did not use the N hood but did use the N gas tank. So I would deduce that yours is a combination of the Funk PTO adapter, combine engine, and N tractor sheetmetal.

I want that hood and those dog legs!!! They are perfect!

I agree with Soundguy..I think it really is something unique and definately worth restoring. Notice how the oilpan is different and had a bolt-to flange to support the front end of the engine....for that matter, it looks like the timing cover is different as well with that extra tab coming off beside the governor. All in all, i think it was one of the many (and also hard to find) side projects of ford to try and make a wide market for their engines....just like the ford N-series crawler tractor conversion. Don't see too many of those, but it's exactly the same...hood, engine, dog legs, grill, just no steering wheel and the rear half is different. Even so, i'd definatly call it "special"....

That hood and grille are pretty durn straight! Amazing how nice they stay when they're not moving around running into things!

The extra attatchment on the back of your engine, well, I have no clue about it. However, that's a regular Ford N series engine, and like mattrrr said, it ain't too special without the rear.

Ummm... its just the front end of a ford. Not soo special unless you have the aft end?! Even if it was used to run the milk pump at one time.

I think you guys are missing the point. This isn't just the front half of a tractor.. it is a stationary engine.. notice the dash has no steering column cutout.. etc.

These were commonly used in water pumps.. electrical generators.. etc..

Does anyone know if the Funk transmission division of John Deere is a descendant of the FUNK outfit we're familiar with???

It is the same company. It is a subsidiary of John Deere. Here is a short blurp about it and I've heard it elsewhere as well.

Thanks for finding that. I suspected as much, but the quick web search I did did not turn up an "offical link".

Quite a heritage... from aircraft to 'N auxillary transmissions anf engine conversions to today's MONSTER products, to the linkup with Deere!

I don't know of any connection between the "Deere Funk" that you gave a link to and the 8N Funks discussed on these pages.
The 8N Funk conversions did not have a custom transmission. They used the 8N tranny. All of the custom Funk items on the 8N were in front of the transmission.
All this being said... that thing in the picture is intersting looking. Seems to have some unique sheet metal. Looks to me like what I'd call a "mechanical power unit" that uses a majority of off the shelf 8N parts.
Henry Ford was a practical man. I would have loved to get an ear full of his engineering concepts.
