My wife has been admiring the wood chippers in the glossy brochure that the DR Chipper guys sent. I have 25 mostly wooded acres with plenty of fodder to run through a chipper (it doesn't really bother me to let it lay on the ground till it self-composts, but you know wives). I have 2 questions;
Can I run a PTO driven chipper with my 8N or do you need something with a live PTO?
Does anybody have any experience with the DR product?

I have one of the DR chippers, I used it on an 8N for a while and had no trouble, keep the RPMs where they belong and it will grind all day long.

Hoot, here is a post I wrote on November 25, 2003. Philip.

I finally got to use my PTO chipper this weekend. I had a work day at my house on saturday, 5 guys showed up to trim limbs and cut trees. I ran the 8N for 6 straight hours with the chipper. The chipper is a Bearcat model with 5" capacity. The 8N and the chipper worked well together. It amazes me that my tractor, designed in 1938, can uses use implements purchased in 2002. What a great design by Harry F. The chipper has a 120 pound flywheel, lots of inertia, does not take much power to turn. When you put in a 5" branch, the rpm's drop, the governor kicks the throttle plate open, the engine starts poppin, and the rpm's come back up, just like it is suppose to work. Neat to stand back and see. The chipper is a nice tool, but it will work you to death. Philip.

I'll bet that if the limbs are a DRY 5" that your elbow and shoulder joints ache that night! Been there, done that!

Hoot,

Where abouts do you live? I'm in w.c. IL and have a PTO-driven MerryMac brand (the one that Northern Tool carries) that I'd be willing to part with. It'll handle up to 3" limbs and has a chipper/shredder section for 1" and smaller stuff. New price is around $1200, but I'd be willing to part with mine for $600. I've moved into town and have no use for it anymore.

Ron,
I LIVE in South America but my mini-ranch is in Western Montana.
Sounds like a good price but the shipping would probably be quite a bit.

Got a DR Brush Mower. It does everything they advertise and then some. Haven't need much tech support, but when I have it has been right on. An 8N should pull the chipper just fine as long as you don't overload it: it is rated for 45hp max. You will need an overriding clutch for the PTO, and just make sure the tractor is in neutral when you engage the PTO. 1500 engine RPMs will give you 540 PTO RPMs.

I don't see any advantage to using a clutch on a chipper. Am I missing something?

Dave,
Since most chippers weight 600 plus pounds and there are a lot of leaky lifts, it MAY be necessary to leave the PTO engaged while moving the chipper. If that's the case, I'd definitely have an ORC. (Actually, I'd fix the lift, 'less it belonged to any of my in-laws.)
