Are there any good ideas as to what to be careful of when working on a front mount dist. I just got a good deal on an 8N the guy told me it was a 9N but it has a 4 speed tranny so I know its an 8N. The reason I got a good deal on it was that the guy couldn't get any spark. I have to pull the hood off because the rad. is out so I figured I'd do the points when I do so I will know they are good, so is there any tricks to the trade so to speak on them front mounts or are they as simple as a side mount?? Thanks

Lots of good advice here, so only a few points to add: first, check point gap on all 4 lobes of the cam; secondly, be very careful not to ground the condenser wire to the housing; thirdly, it never hurts to replace the points mounting screws, and lastly, pull the pigtail on the coil to stretch it out a bit & insure good contact. Oh, one more thing..... .if the number 2 nipple on the cap is broken, that's Henry Ford's way of telling you it's time to replace your kingpin!

Nuttin' to it !! At least as easy as the side mount. There's really no reason to do it when you have the hood off unless it just suits you. The front mount distributor just comes out by removing the 2 bolts that hold it to the block. Simply remove the cap and rotor then pull the distributor. Replace the points and condenser, or whatever it needs. Remember to gap the points to .015 instead of .025 as the side mount gets gapped. Then reinstall the distributor. It will only drop in flush one way as it sits on an offset tang. You can't install it a tooth off or any nasty stuff like that. Some guys adjust the timing but I've had 3 front mount Ns and as long as I carefully gap the points to .015 they run great.
Good Luck, Lee

OLD. They are even simpler than the side mounts.Remember a few things. 1. It can only go on one way. Do not try to force it when reinstalling. The slot in the end of the camshaft is offset so the distributor can only be installed in one position. Therefore the timing will be correct regardless of the crankshaft position. 2. Points are set at 15/1000.
3. I pull the spark plug wires from the cap. Many don't pull them. My wires are marked as to where they go in the cap. 4. Unsnap the coil retaining bail and move the coil aside. 5. Unclip the two distributor clips, one on each side. 6. Take the cap off or if you don't remove the plug wires just move it aside and out of the way. 7. Remove the two bolts on each side of distributor and take it off. 8. Take out the old points and condenser and replace with new stuff just reversing the procedure. 9. Set the points at 15/1000 by rotating the cam so the breaker arm of the points is located on a high point of the cam.
10. Adjust the points using the adjustment eccentric screw. Don't get any oil or grease on the points. Also watch that the flat brass connection between the condenser and the points is not shorted out by touching any part of the distributor. I believe this should do it. Others more experienced will add their comments. Good luck. Ron

I have found my front mount distributor very easy to work on. The only thing I recall about potential problems is the points shorting out. The clip on the wire hits the case. I'm sure someone will jump in that had that problem. I just put new bushings in mine and that went very easy and defiantly helped the running.
