Boy what a pain in the ^%$ messed with one yesterday for hours and could get it to start, had it running the day before but not running well yellow spark. Put in new points and condensor and it still would not run, pulled the hot wire from the top of the coil and would get spark there and pulled the coil and could get spark at the spring thingy but still no spark. Broke down and put a new coil on and tried it and it started right up. I thnik I'll stick with the other type of system as much as I can from now one at least you can see where you have spark.

Say, Old. If you are a tinkerer you might want to try this. On my 8N front I converted it to a round can coil and installed a transistor assisted ignition. The firing pulse goes through the transistor and the points just turn the transistor on and off. I think they carry just 300ma now. You just throw away the condenser. The points with 300ma current should last a lifetime. Very cheap to do. Biggest expense is the round can coil. Should be pretty trouble free after that. Or if you don't like to tinker just get the commercially available front mount transisterized ignition. Cost a lot and takes all the fun out of tinkering. James

Yeah, they can be a bit of a pain at times. On the other hand, if they are properly and carefully serviced at points replacement time and you always put fresh gaskets in them when they are apart, they are just as reliable as anything else. I read about coil problems with them all the time here, but I personally have never had a coil failure and a couple of the N's around here still have the original Ford script coil on them. I suspect many of the reported coil problems are directly or indirectly related to 12 volt conversions. The only 12 volt convert I've got is a sidemount - and it was very carefully done with a modified generator. I've had far more trouble with a front mount getting damp and throwing a fit than anything else. At any rate, I'm glad you got her going. Regardless of the amount of aggravation that they cause, it always gives you a good feeling to hear them light back up and purr once you've nailed down the problem.

At the basics, front mount coil overheating is an over current issue. That puts botched 12v systems, and bypassed ballast resistor systems as prime concerns.

I would also guess that a majority cause of weak spark is probably due to bad or dirty/coroded contacts.. or 50 year old coroded broken spliced wires.. dirty screw terminals.. resistive shorts.. etc.
