1949 front mount 8N.

Picked up 2 5quart jugs of 10w-30 Havoline oil yesterday.
Hope Havoline is good oil to use.
Now I need the oil filter. Which should I get.

I also picked up 2 gallons of Walmart store brand antifreeze.
Hope that brand was ok.

Gotta get some grease too. Any grease ok?

Thanks.

Antifreeze in reply to Pooh Bear, 04-24-2005 21:12:52
Make sure you use an antifreeze for your application. Some are designed for the aluminum in todays radiators and if you mix with other types it will gell and cause problems. Just read the directions on applications and mixing.

Let me add another oil filter to the list. I use cyclone oil filters, part no. X3L, it says replacement for ford part no. 9n-6731. When I bought my 8n 11 years ago a case of these came along with it. As for the oil, I use 10-30 and have had no problems. TOM

I have done a lot of research on the issue, and I dissagree with the statement that oil filters are the same. Oil filters ARE NOT the same. I have seen several independent tests that show the filtration of different oil filters are very different. Use a Wix or NAPA Gold filter (which is a Wix as well), DO NOT use FRAM filters as they let the most contaminants through the filter than any other filter tested. Your 8N oil system is only a partial filteration, meaning all oil does not pass through the filter before use - only about 25% or less at any given time. Eventually, all the oil will get filtered at some point was the theory I guess. This is not a very great system, so why not really clean your oil as much as possible when it does get through the filter?

I use molly grease on my bearings, corn head grease in the steering box, and lithium grease on the spindles, tie rods, lift adjuster, etc.

I also suggest a straight weight oil for the tractor if possible.

Good luck,
Dan

I agree with gahorN and Bob. I do not recommend multi-grade for vintage tractors unless it has been recently rebuilt with clearances on the low side of tolerance. In warm weather I would use 30W in a good engine or 40W in a tired engine. If you must use multigrade oil, I would recommend 15-40 for a good engine or 20-50 for a tired engine.

The brand of oil filter will make little difference in your partial-flow N system. I use NH filters in mine but have used others including NAPA or even Fram. The NAPA filter for an 8N is actually a diesel fuel filter for an older Mercedes automobile (or it once was, at least) and is a much higher quality filter as a result.

Any decent permanent anti freeze mixed with 50%
DISTILLED water will be fine for the cooling system.

oh ya, I picked up a tube of slick 50 grease for my gun at wal mart, and its awesome. Just my pennies though. Almost like my 8n has power steering now!

10-30 oil may be a bit light for hot weather use (oil pressure wise).

Additional filter choices:

Wix # 51010

NAPA # 1010

pooh bear: I use Fram C3 oil filter. I used the Walmart brand of oil 10w30 last time I changed it.

Thanks everybody.
Is one brand of filter better than another.
Or do I just go over to Napa and tell them I need a filter.
I want to give my tractor the best treatment I possibly can.

Hope the antifreeze was OK.
I plan on flushing and refilling soon.

Thanks.

Like the others said.. you may be happier with a straight 30w or 40w oil depending on temps and pressure.

Also.. oil filter is only a partial flow system. Fram c3 is probably the cheapest of the bunch at 3.99.. many of the others are 4.99 to 8.99. The napa 1010 'looks' nice and has a paper shield, etc.. however.. I think with this system.. just about any filter that cross references and fits.. is fine.

Same with oil.. just about any brand 30w is fine.. its gotta be better than what was made in the 30's and 40's.. etc.

Same with grease.. even the tractor supply/wallmart cheapy 84 cents a tube stuff is fine.. any grease is better than no grease..

Same with antifreeze..

Ok, I plan on getting one of these filters.
NAPA Gold 1010 Wix 51010

And I will go get some straight 30w oil.
Keep the stuff I have for next oil change in the car.

I forgot to get distilled water.
Our well water has lots of iron and minerals.
Didn't want to put all that in the radiator.

I will pick up some grease too while I'm there.

Thanks everybody.

Pooh,... the oil filters are all basically the same, pleated paper elements. In a Ford tractor the filter does not fully filter all the oil anyway. It"ll catch big stuff, and after a while the oil all eventually goes thru the filter....but don"t spend a lot of time worrying about the filter quality question. This is truly an "agricultural" system. I"d personally recommend you use a straight-weight oil, however. Multigrades are commonly used in automotive equipment, but for different reasons than you might imagine. (Primarily to meet EPA mileage requirements.) The best oil for our tractors in my opinion is a straight weight SAE 30 in a "young" engine and SAE 40 in one that doesn"t hold oil pressure well due to worn bearings. In fact, SAE 50 will do well for a tired engine as long as it"s not wintertime. Multiweight oils such as 10W30 are really SAE 10 wt oil (very very thin) with additives to discourage further thinning so that when hot it behaves like hot SAE 30 does. But it"s still only 10 weight oil and when the additives wear out that"s all you have. Not much protection for a hard working engine, in my opinion. SAE 30 wt oil will still be 30 wt oil. So, if it"s not too late,...I"d recommend you take your oil back and exchange it for SAE 30, just make sure it has the seal for automotive service SL or SC on the label somewhere. This will indicate it"s an additive oil...not a non-detergent oil. Oil brands are unimportant these days. Buy the least expensive brand name you can find. I use WalMart"s "Super Tech" brand in my Jeep and it"s got over 245,000 miles on it now, so that 88-cent/quart oil is just fine.
Hope this helps.
