Got an 8N that #1 cylinder intake valve sticks open, when its cold I can take a screw driver and tap it closed and it will work good till the engine is warm and then it sticks open and I can't close it till it cools off. This tractor has sat for who knows how long since it had run last, I guess years. Anybody have any ideas on what might be the problem?? I'm thinking about pulling the head and tappet cover and just plain takeing it out and cleaning it up to see if maybe it has a lot of rust etc on it. I'm I looking in the right way or is there other things I may need to think about. I've never had this trouble out of any old tractor till now, and I do have a few 20 plus that is.
Thanks for any ideas

If you've tried everything else, just one more thing before you resort to the teardown. Remove the carb to air cleaner tube. Get the engine warmed up and squirt some diesel into the carb airhorn as its running. I've seen my dad use this trick when he had no other choice and have had some success with it myself. Diesel has great lubricating properties and it comes from the combustion side to attack from a different angle. Worth atry before you get out all those tools!

Old..... ..unless yer just dying to open up yer engine, I'd at least do a Marvel Mysterious Oil treatment of all yer valve stems. Remove yer valve covers and squirt some MMO on the valve stems and handcrank the engine around so all the valvestems go up and down while being washed by MMO. Remove yer sparkies so its eazy to handcrank yer fanblades and engine go round. Iff'n you have enny MMO left, just add itt to yer crankcase oil. In fact, I'd have a 2nd can of MMO ready to add to the crankcase oil. After ya flushed yer valve stems, putter back together and starter and gitter really warmed up; 1hr. Its a cheap $10 treatment and might save you an engine teardown. Iff'n the treatment diddn't help, you'll still be glad for the clean valvestems, when you tear yer engine down..... .....Dell

What do you think? It has been mentioned several times that it is easy to turn over the N motor by hand with the fan or otherwise with the plugs removed..Well mine cannot be turned with the fan at all and with a wrench on the crank pulley bolt it has a tough spot or two that takes pretty good effort with the wrench to turn it..

Tom..... ..dunnno, sounds like a fresh engine rebuild with tight bearing clearance. Normally, you don't have reason to handcrank a fresh engine rebuild..... ...Dell

Thanks. I know it hadn't been rebuilt in the last 12-15 years, but still holds good oil pressure(40# at full throttle)..

I've already tried them oil, tranny fluid, and turpentine, should have put that in my first post. Tried to pull the tappet cover with the intake/exhaust manifold on and its a no go.

I was going to suggest some MMO to help free it up, applied liberally to the valve, some inthe fuel and oil.. however.. if it is a hard stick.. I'd say you are on the right course with the head and valve cover pull.
