Worked the tractor (8N frontmount)hard this weekend. When I was done the tractor was running poorly, missing, etc. Started looking at the electrical, plug wires, distributor cap, and then came across the breaker plate adjustment. The screw holding the plate was loose. Started the tractor, adjusted the plate to where she was running good, but when I would tighten the breaker screw, the tractor would lag and then die. Loosen the screw everything was fine, tighten the screw, she dies. What is wrong, why can't I tighten the screw, is it grounding out? Thanks.

When you tighten the screw, it pulls the breaker plate tight against that side of the distributor, affecting the point gap. Take the distributor off, set the timing by the "bench method", and verify the point gap again.

While you're at it, check to be sure the timing adjustment screw is not shorting anything out, and that the little copper strip from the points is not cracked, as well as that the insulator at the top of the breaker plate, where the special brass screw that the coil "spring thingy" contacts is in good condition.

Check out the link below, for instructions on "bench setting" the timing.

Make sure the previous owner did not put "new" screws in to hold the breaker plate and get them too long where they are contacting the timing advance weights underneath this plate. That would cause you problems.

Good luck,
Dan
