Tractor barely runs

Until a couple of months ago, my "39 9N ran perfectly. I had changed over to a 12V negative ground system and given it a full tune up about two years ago. It has probably 20 hours on it since then. It would start on the first try and run smoothly. It always seemed to be running on 3 cylinders, though, until it warmed up.

A couple of months ago, I took the tractor over to my neighbor"s house. She wanted to play a trick on her son, who was turning 16 and wanted a car. I parked the tractor in the driveway and enjoyed the prank. I left it there for a couple of days while I was away on a trip.

When I returned, the tractor would not start. After extensive troubleshooting, I confirmed spark and fuel, but could only get it started on one cylinder.

Any suggestions? Could it be timing (front-mount distributor) or stuck valves? Guess I need to check the spark plug wire order, although I was the only one to work on the machine and kept everything as it was when it was working.

Thank you in advance for your assistance! The book doesn"t cover this unusual situation.

I'm thinking that the last laugh may have been by the son of your friend. swapped plug wires, distributor moved a little, you know.....

Just go through the routine troubleshooting steps- fuel? spark at the right time, etc. until you nail the culprit(s) down. Now that you have a 12 volt system, a regular automotive timing light can be a big help, as you can use it to verify each plug is getting a spark, even if you can really only "Time" #1 with it.

Good luck

If it was running good, unless you suspect someone has messed with it, I'd start with a new set of spark plugs, and verify the plug wire arrangement also.

I had some time last night to try additional things. I did a compression test, which shows all 4 cylinders are around 125 psi, which eliminates the valve theory. Verified plug gap, plug wire routing and distributor are OK. I"m getting spark on all 4, but not a strong one.

At this point, I am thinking it could be timing, point gap or a marginal coil. The exhaust smells of unburned fuel when it is cranked. I"ll check these and report back with the results. Thanks for your help!

I pulled the distributor off last night, and found that the point gap was fouled by a stalagmite of metal. The points had worked their way out of parallel, somehow. I ground that off and reinstalled and lubed everything. Also checked the gap and... no difference. Still only running (barely) on 1 cylinder.

I've ordered a new set of points and a condenser. Will see if that is going to work. The coil is the last step. Hope to get it going soon.
