When I work on a tractor like the 8N I'm working on now I use an old lawn mower gas tank to run the engine, that way you don't have to pull the hood off and on to work on it and also you only have 1 quart of gas so if something does go wrong like a back fire you don't have much gas to start a fire with. And and 8N will run for a good 30 minutes on it with out a load.

I use a similar setup. I bought an item from JC Whitney which is like a gasoline IV bag. It"s made of hard plastic and holds about a half gallon of fuel. It is very portable and has an on/off valve on the fuel line. The name of the item is the Motion Pro Auxiliary 2-Liter Fuel Tank. Costs about $40.

its called a redneck gas tank
ive updated mine to an old gal. thinner can, brazed a 1/4" hose barb near the bottom with a hose and another barb on the top, when its not connected to a tractor the hose gose on the top barb to seal it off, when on a tractor the barb works as a good vent
