No Spark

I have a 1951 8N with a side mount distributor that ran great for 3 years. Then it started dying out after about 1 hour run time and would not start until it had a 15-20 min. rest. Finally, it would not start at all. "Buddy" jumped it at the battery with 12 volts which took out battery and starter solenoid. Replaced those and then the coil, points, condenser, rotor, and cap. No spark yet. Found that the coil was wired wrong and corrected that (+ on coil to distributor). Still no spark. Removed external wire from distributor and rubbed it on manifold. At first there was no spark (rust?), then got spark. Replaced wire and tractor fired right up and has been running great since. All starting tests were ran with key switch jumpered and old coil was tested at auto electric shop and found to be good. Fuel tank was drained and all screens and carburetor removed and cleaned prior to working on spark problem.
I have no idea of what the original problem was or what was the exact thing that corrected it!
Has anyone got any ideas?
Also, what other effects will show up from the 12 volt jumper stunt? The amp. meter shows a +30 right after start then drops down to about +5 after a short run time.

Thanks for the insight guys.
While changing points, I did not see a copper strip. But there was a yellow wire inside the distrubitor. The copper strip must have caused problems before my ownership and was changed out.

It sure sounds like a bad coil. Coils with "thermal" faults CAN check out good on a coil tester, yet fail after they heat up.

Also, suspect the insulated feed-through bushing in the distributor housing, and the primary wire from the coil to the distributor, and the connections at both it's ends, since it started after you "fiddled" with that wire.

Dells itcher list says it was probably the coil. If it's charging OK now I wouldn't worry about the 12 volt jump thing. That's been done many times without any major problems. Later, Lee
