Should I buy the three or four ring pistons? I'm rebuilding my 1947 8n (.40). Should I get the chrome or plain also? Thanks, Aaron

Aaron..... ...3-ring pistons are the way to go. Modern 3-part oilcontrol rings are better. Chrome rings last longer under harsh operating conditions but plain rings seal better and faster. Most N-Engines anymore don't opperate under harsh, dusty conditions and don't need chrome rings.

Heres the deal, the 4-ring piston has 2-oil control rings and the thinking was the 2nd oilcontrol ring would make the engine last longer. Found out that the 2nd (bottom) oilcontrol ring actually contributed to increased engine wear because it was too good. And actually caused hp loss from excess friction. All modern engines use 3-ring pistons..... ....Dell
