Well it has been a while since I was on site but have been busy. We moved out to our ranch in Oct. of last year and have not had time to do much but WORK !! Now the real problems I have with the 8N. I completely rebuilt it and have several problems. I am using a library computer as we do not have a land line at our place.

The first and major problem is the transmission is locked in a weird configuration that has the rear wheels locked and the clutch does not disengage to start or move the tractor. I did not do anything to the transmission during rebuild except remove the two pivots one at a time to paint them. The tractor did move but it would slip out of first gear. All other gears worked. Then it would get stuck in first but the clutch would disengage the engine. I would remove the shift lever and move the rod (I do not have a parts manual with me now so I do not know the proper part number) and it would work after putting it back together. But it now is really stuch. There are two plates the bottom is stuck all the way forward and will not move. I tried prying it would did not put too much force as I did not want to break somthing. Also the shifting rod is stuck in the forward position and it will not move. In the parts manual it shows some kind of washers that I do not have on the pivots. I don not know if they fell off or I did not have. I took the tractor apart in 1998.

The second major problem is the steering. I replaced the front and rear steering (joints ?)but kept the original sleeves. Now when I turn the wheel on the opposite side I am turning will turn all the way and lock up. I suspect the sleeve length is not right. I have all all the dimensions but not with me.

Any help would be appreciated. The good thing is the oil pressure os now 50-55 PSI.

I will try to check back in a day or so when I get back to town. It is different moving from the Houston area to Rocksprings but we really like it.

Thanks,

Alex

Thanks Dan for the reply. I assume I can take the two pivots out and remove them. If this is so can I then try to put them back after realigning them?

The 7225 (lower shift plate) is the one that is stuck in the forward position. Also the 7240 (first and third gear shift rail) is stuck.

I can start the tractor with the clutch in but the rear wheels are locked and will not move. I can rock the tractor a little bit.

I will try your suggestion to realign the steering.

Any other suggestions on unsticking the transmission would be aooreciated. I do not want to remove the transmission as I have discing to do.

Thanks,

Alex

Even though you removed one pivot at a time on your tranny, the shifter plates will slide down when you remove the bolt. I had my shifter cover off and still took 30 minutes to get both shifter plates in place when I replaced all the guts in my NAA. They are very tricky to get lined up and in place, and you have to hold your tongue just right. I am guessing the one or both shifter plates are not secured on one or both sides.

On your steering, I am sure the sleeve length is correct, you probably just screwed the tie rods in too much. Normally, you turn all the way to one side, then count the number of turns on your steering wheel to turn all the way to the other side, then turn back half that much and it "should" put you centered straight ahead. Then you can adjust your tie rods to make both wheels point straight ahead. Problem is, if your wheels lock up on the axle, you may not be able to find true straight ahead because you have too much toe in. I would remove both front tie rods, do the proceedure I described above, keep your steering wheel from moving once centered, then re-install the tie rods and align the front wheels.

Good luck,
Dan

i just replace some broken gears in the 8n and finally got the front and rear connected back to the middle section. but when i put on the gear shift lever it wont move like it is in nuetral. it is just stuck i tried messing with the fork rods and stuff but nothing changes. i notice the top pivot place is a little of line when it is in nuetral and could be causeing the problem. do you know of a way to correctly align all the shifting pieces. i can easily shift when i just got a screw driver and the cap of the tranny is off. but as soon as i put on the gear shifter it just likes into place. any ideas. thanks
