I"ve got a distinct eng. knock, its loudest sbout the manifold area on right side and just above oil pan on left side. Never messed with flat heads, so I don"t know if a valve would make that kind of noise. It goes away at higher rpm. I sure hope its not a rod knock.

From what you say this is a very common problem BUT do not go to an excessive weight of oil. Instead go to a product like STP. mix it in your oil and there will be no knock. You will still have the benefit of the lubricating oil that you are using . I use this myself in the excessive hot summer weather & never have had any problems..

Take the fan belt off and start the engine before you do anything else and see if the noise goes away. Sometimes water pumps or generators can make a sound like you are hearing. I don't ever recall hearing a rod that knocks less the faster an engine turns. You can also pull the plug wires one at a time while the tractor is running and isolate the noise to one cylinder, if you have a knock from a rod when you pull the plug wire on that cylinder you will hear the change in the knock.

Thanks Dave, i'll try that. but alt, and water pump are both new and knock is tward the back. Have a low rpm miss also, thats why I was hoping a sticky valve. By the way it samed to get worse after changing the oil(5qt val 10w30 and 1qt mmo.

As Dan said the problem is the oil probably. Go to a 30 or 40 stright weight oil and I bet the knock will go bye bye

I think you discovered your solution yourself! 10W30 is way too thin for these engines, especially if they aren't freshly rebuilt. Add to that some thinner MMO, and you have a real thin motor oil that these tractor engine tolerances were not designed for. Drain the oil, put in stright 40w or 20w50 if you still want to use MMO, and I think you will find your knocking gets significantly better or goes away completely. If it was truly a rod knock the noise would increase with RPMs. The miss is probably a sticking valve, very common in these engines. Put some MMO in the gas as well per instructions and that will help that issue.

Both problems you describe are very common to the flathead N Series engine, it is almost like their trademark.

Good luck,
Dan
