I recently re wired a 1950 8N side distrubator, new harnes,regulator,junction block and switch.
It starts and runs and charges a litle. The problem is when I shut it of it imediatly pegs the ammeter in a discharge mode. Pulling the batery cable results in much sparking.It can then can be reconected with no draw.Did I wire something wrong or do I have a bad regulator?

Archie..... ...anytime someone reports they re-wired their tractor (and it is a simple electrical system) and then report that they have an electrical problem, the re-wiring job is always a prime suspect for cause of problem.

According to your description, what is happening is yer voltage regulator "cut-out" relay isn't releasing when you stop gennin', that causes a big discharge back thru yer genny gutts that you read on yer ammeter and makes sparkies when you wizely disconnect yer battery cable to stop the discharge.

First step is to re-polarize yer voltage regulator. Just arc-spark yer BATT and ARM terminals of yer voltage regulator (engine off). The BATT & ARM terminals have HEAVY yellow coded wires attached to them. Ignore the skinny black wire terminals (FLD & GND). I use a wide screwdriver blade 'cuz its convient but you can use a piece of wire iff'n you want. You can ALWAYS re-polarize yer voltage regulator as many times as it makes you feel warm and comfortable.

Iff'n re-polarization doesn't "fixx" yer discharge problem, then more'n'likely you have a BAD voltage regulator. Repair is by replacement..... ....HTH, Dell
