After getting my 8N stuck a couple times in the last few years, this spring most of the rear differential parts busted and gauged up everything in their path. I"ve got quite a mess. I need one rear axle, the spider gears, the carrier that encloses the spider gears, all seals, bearings, etc. Looks like the pinion and ring gear are all right. Does anyone have any tips on both where to find parts (online) and also, any tips in general for putting it back together. This is the first time I"ve been this deep into it. How does the ring gear come off the housing? It looks like big pins or big rivets. Also, I"ve read on this site about shims in there somewhere. I don"t recall any shims on disassembly, but I may have missed them. Any and all tips on this project would be much appreciated.
Also, does anyone have an exploded parts diagram of the rear end of a "52 8N?
Thanks,
Jeff

I have a 48 that I just did new brakes, replaced axel bearings 1 side and set axel end play, new pto 1.375 shaft, and new gaskets both trumpets over winter. Tractor has a blown motor and I'm seriously considering parting it out. If you can't find what you need and want a complete bolt on rear end maybe we can get together. I'm in west Ill, just down river ( mississippi) from Dubuque IA.
jkorschot at derbyworks dot net. I have not torn it down yet but could.

Wisconsin,

The ring gear is riveted onto the differential case.

Special bolts are available from FNH for field service.

I have a complete differential case. My ring and pinion went out, I swapped in a complete spare assembly. I believe my case is good. If you don't find one nearby, let's make a deal, and I'll UPS it to you.

It would be tomorrow before I can locate the unit, and check it out.

Thanks Bob - please take a look at what you have and let me know. I appreciate the links sent in by the others too. I"m going to start pricing this stuff out this week.
Does anyone have a parts breakdown of the rear end?

With that much damage and parts I would think about finding a used complete rear or center section and avoid all the bearing preload/gear mesh set up. Cost would probably be a wash compared with individual parts. I don't know where in WI you are but do a google search under "tractor salvage WI" as you will need some used parts such as the diff gear carrier. Check your local New holland guy also.

Steve:

From the FO-4...

"Drive gear and pinion mesh is NOT adjustable".

You set the pre-load on the pinion bearings, and that's about it for adjustments.

Sorry, I didn't go check the manual. I was just going by previous experience with rear ends in general and try to avoid the dial indicators, prussian blue, etc needed to properly setup an automotive rear end. And the reality of most of these is the low speed and limited use it would probably work just fine even if a little noisy. It just sounds like he'll need quite a few parts and often it's cheaper and easier to swap in a used one than replace the guts on your old one.
