Weak, intermittant spark

I had my 2N running fine for several hours, and then it died in the field. I could get it to restart, but it ran weak and only for a while. After I nursed it home I let it sit for a week, and this weekend I checked it out. Seems I have very little spark. When I check for spark the engine turns and turns but I only get spark once in a while. I removed the distributor cap and found the top, flexible tang on the rotor broke. Oddly, I had a half-good rotor from a previous tune up so I installed that (I never throw nothin' away!) My spark is still weak and intermittant. Upon further review I noticed two of the distributor contacts have deep grooves in them, and two look like they are hardly worn. Shouldn't there be a kinda build-up on the contacts that needs to be scraped away? What would cause grooves? It looks like the rotor cut them! I would include a picture, but I don't know how yet. I have a digital camera, so how do I add a picture?

I would check the bushings on the distributor. It looks like they may have wear in them to cause your problem. Remove your distributor and use the wiggle test to check out the bushings. Bushings are cheap and can easily be replaced on the front mount distributor.
Happy motoring
