Hi All: I bought a 9N recently...seller told me He thought the generator was shot. I charged the battery, drove it home (about 9 miles with no problems.)

Got a new 6 volt generator, installed it, and still no charge on ammeter. Also I have to charge battery after several starts, so I am quite sure the battery is not getting a charge. I put a meter from the single post on the generator to ground and am getting a charge.

I drove 9Ns on the farm 50 years ago, haven't been on one since. I am an airplane salesman and frankly do not have any tractor electrical knowledge. What would any of you guys do next for troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance! Pete

Sounds like a 15$ bad cutout relay.. or one that just needs polerizing. You might try that old genny.. You may just be setting on a spare.

Cutout was oem setting ont he stering coulmn.. round can.. 2 terminals.

Just jumpe rthe terminals when not running.. then check it running to see if it shows charge.

Sounds like it isn't cutting in.

I jumped across the cutout relay, then started the tractor. Still no charge on ammeter. Also i put meter across relay terminals while engine running, showed complete erratic, no steady charge. Very similar to what generator showed when tractor was running.

Presume this means the cutout relay is shot?

Thanks for your prompt reply and help! Pete

Pete,
Couple things. Digital voltmeters often don't like tractor electrical systems. Try an analog meter if you have one available. And, instead of reading across the cutout, read from the side that goes to the bottom post on the resistor block (the terminal NOT connected to the resistor) to a ground; or, just read voltage at that bottom post to ground with the tractor running. If cutout is closed, you should read generator voltage. Not at all headline news when a new electrical component is bad.
