I jusst bought a Ford Flail mower. The PTO shaft is too long to fit with my override adapter. The shaft is square, if I cut the round part on the shaft ,the square part would be gone. Any other options than a new (shorter ) shaft? Thanks joe

FYI: that round part is the shield and comes off if you remove an inside snap ring down inside the end behind the knuckle. You can get a bearing kit at TSC or elsewhere with the nylon bearing if it"s worn. There"s that nylon bearing on each end. You can easily remove the shield and cut it to a different length or to clean it up so it slides free for easier hook up. I think my square shaft is just some different legnth from the round shield.
Leastwise, that"s how my shaft and shield is set up. I like how it works now I replace the nylon bearings because the shield spins easy now and slides easy.

Not sure a ORC is required with the Flail Mower, maybe someone else will know that but I do know it is important to cut equal amounts off both ends of the shaft when you do cut one. If you use the same shaft for different mowers make sure it is not too short for the other one before you cut it. A second shaft may be the only option.

Old9,
U can cut a bit out of the middle of the round part, take a piece of angle to line the shaft back up, tack it in a few places then remove the angle and finish welding the cut up. You will probably have to cut a little off the sq. part too. Make sure that when you raise and lower the mower there is enough shaft left as to not come out, and not too much that it will bottom out.

I must be missing something here.. what kind of shaft are we talking about exactly.. What's witht he cut and weld int he middle? is this not a 2 part sliding shaft.. At least a few of us are thinking it is.
