The manuals have arrived and I have read the operators manual and a lot of the FO-4. I am wanting to start on the fuel system as I cannot run the tractor currently for fear of causing problems from the leaking carburetor. I can work on it this weekend if I buy my parts from Tractor Supply Company. Do they sell quality replacement parts for carb rebuilds? Does anybody have any recommendations or experience with parts from TSC?
I suspect I have a bad float and will need/want to replace any gaskets and seals. Opinions welcomed.

Tsc sells a full ad partial kit.. 2x.00 for the partial.. and 30 for the full.. only difference I see is the needles and jets. Neither have the float.. both have the gaskets, felts and springs, rubbers. full also has choke plate and rod.. etc.

I used one last year.. not super.. but worked.. tractor runs.. carb doesn't leak. I did have to mix and match some parts though on a kit for another tractor.. my cub. Everything atched but the float seat.. used old seat, and new needle.. that worked fine.. though i was unsure it was going to till I put the fuel to it.

At very least get a bottle of carb cleaner.. a bucket of chem dip is the best.. but thats another 20$

Their kit is more than the NH genuine gasket kit and valve and seat, only about $3.00 ea. compared to close to twenty.

They do sell the basic rebuild kit that contails the gaskets, seals, and shut off valve. It does not include the float or jets. If you need these, you can still get these at new holland dealers or off the net. The TSC parts are fine, just a tad high in cost.

Tip - submerse your float in glass of HOT water for a minute or so to test for pin holes (I use needle nose pliers to hold it down). The heat will expand the air inside the float and it will forcethe air to bubble out any pin holes. No bubbles - no holes.

Good luck,
Dan

on the threads were striped but he o gaskets and the main plate gasket was ok I was a little troubled but hte cost and had to repair and was not able to use the needle and seat it was late at night and I waned to get here bacl running so I put carb back together seems to run Ok

I don"t why to replace the jets or seat unless I know they need replaced. That said, can"t remember ever knowing they need replaced. Not that I rebuild a lot of carbs but those hard parts aren"t likely to wear or or get damaged. They get damaged trying to remove them is what happens.
I spin a round toothpick in the orifice to polish them clean and let them ride.

The brass jets do wear - especially after 50+ years and thousands of hours running time. It is extremely difficult to notice it because the hole is so small and we do not usually have the correct instruments to accurately measure this hole. It does not take much wear to change the air/fuel ratios of these carbs, that is why so many of these old carbs get a bad rep about not operating correctly. With the right screwdrivers to fully fit the jet slot, and an overnight soak in carb cleaner, the right amount of pressure, and holding your tongue just right, these jets will come out pretty easy. I replace all jets when I rebuild my carbs on my tractors, and the ones I sell from time to time, and I would pit them up against the new Zenith carbs for operation and efficiency anyday.

Just my $.02 worth,
Dan

I suppose it can happen a jet wears too far. Never had it happen myself. Never replaced a jet or seat in maybe a dozen or 18 carb rebuilds and they adjust, start and run fine or better. Cars, various small engines, whatever. If it didn"t run, start or run fine or better after a rebuild then I would look at the jets or seat but it hasn"t turned out that way for me. I might have changed some jets when I was green, been a while.

Thanks all. I think I will take it apart and see if it needs a new float. Then I will go up to NH and get all I need at once. Nearest actual dealer is a good 30-40 miles away. I believe it needs a new float but could be just a cleaning. I am sure I will have questions as I have never done a carb before.

You don"t need to change a float very often, if ever. Put it in hot water look for tiny bubbles streaming from any leak. Spin a round wooden tooth pick in the jets and seat and you"ll feel it rough if it is. If it"s smooth and gets shiny it"s likely ok.
Stick a 1/4" bit under the float to set the hieght. You want if at 1/4 or just over and level. Level is important. Needlenose and fiddling with it right at the hinge will get it right.
Easy does it tighten the body screws. Too much torque warps and it will leak around the gasket. If it"s already warped you can lay a sheet of sandpaper on a paine of glass or even a good counter and do a figure-8 to sand it flat.
You must get the ports and passages clean including the tiny port in the throttle throat and the smaller port next to that small also. Welder"s tip (cleaners) smallest two sizes, works ok for that. Take a qtip dipped in solvent, paint thinner, whatever and dap some in the big end of the passage and see if it comes out of the tiny ports on the other end. If it doesn"t you aren"t done yet and you can"t ever get the idle low enough.
