pulled pan and can't find any thing, bearung in no1 looks as good as the rest..no sign of knocking. no2 rod bolt was hitting the oil pickup tube...fixed that, sleeve is not moving, can't see any play in wrist pin. this motor must have been rebuilt not long ago, everything is real clean and new looking, lots of carbon under head...might have been running a little rich, but ran good except for the low rpm miss.....any ideas?

If the bearings do check ut.. my next guess would be a valve issue.. Heck.. you are already at this point.. pull the head if you havn't... look like it has been milled? and contact clearance areas?

Other than that.. valves look like they are moving fine?

I know it is bugging you.. and it would bug me too till I found it.

I second what Paul said regarding checking your clearances with Plasti-guage. You are already there, and it only takes a minute. You should have a gap between .001 and .0025 in. and no more than .005 in. Torque the connecting rod nuts to 35-40 ft. lbs.

Good luck with the troubleshooting,
Dan

I would check the rod bearings with Plasti-Gauge after going to all the work to remove the oil pan. That will really tell you exactly how much clearance there is on the bearings. It may be the oil pickup tube was the problem but the Plasti-Gauge will be a well worth doing.

How did you check the rod bearing?? Was there any play in it at all, just a a very little will make a big noise. But on another note the rod hitting the pick up tube may have been the knock
