2N Brake Adjusters

Hello All!

I've done a search on this in the discussion forum but didn't find anything specifically on this.

Installing new brakes on my 2N. One side is on just fine, but the other side it seems like those two short adjusting rods coming out of the adjuster to the brake shoes just aren't in as far as they should be. The brakes are extended too far to slip into the hub. The adjuster is turned out as far as it will go...meaning set for loosest adjustment. I have assembled the unit and turned the adjuster to see if they'll pop in further, but they haven't.

What's inside the adjuster? Is it suppose to "register" on the adjusting screw a certain way? Is that angled-cam that pushes on the adjuster rods a one-piece or two-piece affair?

Thanks ahead for your thoughts.

they are just a one-piece deal that fit over a wedge inside the adjuster unit. Try spraying some PB Blaster on the outside of the adjuster where the square stud comes out and working it back and forth. I thought mine was all the way out and I eventually got another 4-5 full turns out of it using the PB Blaster. I still think I had to tap the brakes in with the wooden end of the hammer, though because it still wasn't enough to just drop in on the one side. I too had one side drop in and the other side stick.

Thanks, Jeb2N. I'll try that. After I posted I found an illustration that shows it's a one-piece. On the other side, it was too far out but then I turned the adjuster and it went "pling!" and both shoes popped in.

It shall not defeat me.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's the other thing. Won't hurt to lightly tap the wedges and make sure that they aren't hung up as well. I would avoid spraying them with anything if you already have the new shoes installed as the spray might end up on the shoes and have bad effects.
