greetings!

I loaned my '48 8N to a neighbor, and when they couldnt get it to start, they jumped it to the battery from a pick-up.. I think they crossed polarity as well as they didn't understand that it is a positive earth system...
so now, after replacing the battery and voltage regulator I can pull start it, and it runs fine, but now the ammeter is pegged to the charge side at anything above an idle, like the voltage reg was bad... could this be a symptom of a fried generator...? the starter also acts like it has a dead short somewhere... HALP...!!!

Thanks...!

You need to polarize whenever the wires are removed from the genny or regulator, every time. You don"t remove the wires but momentarily short from Bat to Arm/Gen on the regulator if you haven"t done it already.
Some N"s are polarized by shorting Bat to Field but not likely your N. Don"t short Bat to Field unless you came back for more info.
If it shows a charge while you only have the key switched on or are just cranking the engine before it fires up, then the ammeter is miswired and you can swap the wires to fix that. If you are actually getting a lot of amps out of the genny it"s a good one so don"t mess with it.

The 8N A-circuit system polorizes by "BAT" to "ARM", the NAA and later B-circuit sytems polorize by shorting "BAT" to "FLD".

Robbyn - I'll bet your well-meaning friend did reverse the polarity and "spot welded" your regulator contacts together - new regulator time I am afraid. You can verify this by seeing the ammeter stay discharged after the tractor is turned off, or by pulling the cover off the regulator and seeing the contacts still touching. However, try this first before you get another regulator - remove the "BAT" and "ARM" leads off your regulator and spark short them together a few times. It will spark - that is ok. This will polorize your generator and let it know which way the voltage should be running. This "might" fix your problem (the more electronics educated will be along shortly to tell you if I am full of bologna on this).

Remember - you "CAN" safely jump start your tractor with a 12V car battery, but you hook one lead to the big starter nut and touch the other lead (+ on a positive ground system) to the tractor body. Check THREE times to ensure the shifter is in neutral first as you are bypassing the saftey starter button this way.

Good luck,
Dan
