8N voltage output

Can anybody help me with an issue I"m having with my first 8N that I just bought? It is still original (to the best of my knowledge) with a 6 volt system. However, 10 volts were going into the 6 batter when the engine was off, 12 volts were going into the battery when the engine is on, and the generator puts out 13 volts. There are no plates or numbers on the generator for me to be sure that it is a 6 volt generator. Several mechanics said that it appeared as if someone put a 12 volt generator on it along with the othe regulator and other related parts, so I should put in a 12 volt battery with a ballast resistor. I did this, the voltage meter went straight to -30 and then came back to 0 and would not move. Some other people then told me that a six volt battery can hold 12 volts, and a 6 volt generator can put out 12-13 volts, so I probably had no problems and I just blew out the voltage regulator when I put the 12 volt in. Now however, I have went back to a 6 volt battery, it runs great, but voltage meter will not go over 5 and previously it ran at 20. The batter seems to hold a charge though, so I"m not sure if I blew my voltage regulator after all. Does anybody have thoughts or recomendations?

I'd take the gen/alt and v/r to a real gen/alt shop and ask 'em to test it for ya. They usually do it for free. HTH

Aaron..... ...I'm certain what you wrote makes perfect sense to you but it doesn't to me...sigh! I flunked mindreading, just ask my ex-wife.

Where do you get your voltage readings?

Your 8N came from the factory 6v positive ground and a 30-0-30 ammeter on the leftside of the dashpanel.

An AMP meter is NOT a VOLT meter altho they both measure electrical stuff.

Iff'n all yer meter reading you are quoteing are from the OEM ammeter, then calling them AMPS instead of volts would make sense.

And yer 6 voltage regulator is BAD.

Iff'n yer meter readings you are quoteing are from an EXTERNAL hand held voltmeter; and calling them truely volts, then some of them DON'T make sense.

The OEM 3-terminal 6v genny with squarecan voltage regulator is IMPOSSIBLE to output 13v.

Howsomevers; hard telling what some shadetree mechanic might have done. There are 12v gennys that look exactly like 6v gennys. Sometimes they have lables/partnumbers, sometimes they don't. They require matching squarecan 12v regulators and 12v batterys. (tip: 12v batterys have 6 watercaps)

Its very possible the previous owner knew diddly-squatt about the tractors electrical system and decided that his electrical problems were caused by a bad battery and was sold the standard 8N 6v battery instead of the shadetree mechanics conversion 12v battery.

There is NO-WAY that I can guess what has been done by the previous owner. You're yer best detective, and you're electrically challenged.

Eather hire a real tractor mechanic to square your electrical system to OEM 6v positive ground. That will probablely cost you $150 for NEW 6v genny and squarecan voltage regulator plus mechanic's time$$$ ...or... byte the bullett and do it right with a real 12v conversion witha 12v alternator and built-in voltage regulator. $150 + mechanics time$$$.

Your call..... ....respectfully, Dell a 12v advocate for the right reasons

That said, I haven't found the right reason for my eazy starting 6v '52 8N, and I know how to do it right the 1st time. Infact, I know 8-ways to do it and they all work.
