Well, we got Ethyl out of the dry creek bed, and now its on to new problems. I decided to hook up and go hoggin. After about an hour it quit and would not fire. I did not think to bypass the ignition switch at the time to see if that was the cause. The ballast resistor looks original, this is a 12v conversion on this, so maybe problem? I guess if she fires up tomorrow with same results, bad coil? I only ran it about 30 hours after replacing last time. I think I am on the right track here. Also, where in the heck can one even find a ballast resistor, or is there a newer OEM? The previous owner also decided it best to replace the starter switch by the gearshift with one he cut a hole in the dash for, just terrible. Thanks in advance.

I thought if you ran a 12 volt coil you didn't need a balast resistor?

Jack,
With a front mount distributor, a 12 volt installation still needs to limit the 14+ volts the alternator is supplying. Hence, Dell's trick current limiting resistor. But you are correct that the original ballast resistor is not used with a 12 volt coil.

john, you should be able to find a resistor at an auto parts store. ive bought one before at o'reilleys auto parts. also if you will type in tisco and when the site comes up you type in your zip and it will give you the closest tisco dealers to you. you can get every part you need on the n series or just about any old tractor.

Would a fuse work? in reply to John in Bama, 05-06-2005 15:43:43
John,
Bet this secret fuse masquerading as a resistor will do your tractor a world of good. (grin)
