Picked up a 47 2N Saturday. Has been sitting many years. Bought it for the tires and sheet metal but wanted to know the condition of the engine. Swapped the starter put in some fresh fuel and got power to the coil. Almost starts but not quite. After quite a bit of cranking I noticed I wasn't reading any oil pressure. Engine was about dry when I got it. I had put in the 3 quarts I had and it was still quite low on the stick. Being it was so low for so long could I have a problem with the pump or should it prime itself. Also are the blocks the same from a front dist. to side dist? Is it just a timing cover difference or are there other issues?

Any time I pick up a tractor that has sat for any lengh of time I fill the cylinders with tranny fluid. Why because if will lube the cylinders and if it has stuck rings most of the time it will loosen them up, also boosts the compression on start up. Just a trick I learned from years of playing with engines, also cheaper then MMO

Bob..... ....except for the front timing cover plate there really is NO DIFFERENCE internally engine wize between a frontmount 2N and a sidemount 8N. (well, the 8N's compression ratio is up 1/2 point from 6.0 to 6.5, big deal)

NOT ALL engine oilpumps produce engine oilpressure while cranking. And YES, they can loose prime after setting for many years. And YES, you can always re-prime yer engine oilpump by squirting some VERY HEAVY 90wt or 140wt oil down the oilpressure relief valve behind the water pump. Don't use engine oil because it will drain right out the pump and you still will loose prime.

Your almost start is indictative of LOW COMPRESSION. Probably stuck rings.

While you can and should do the dreaded engine compression test, Ford specs: 90psi min (dry). ME? I'd just squirt about 1-oz of engine oil down every sparkie hole and spin the motor to spread it around ...THEN... put yer sparkies back in and give it a shot of ether quickstart and you should gitta varoom..... ...Dell

John..... ...of course, the 4-bolt frontmount camshaft (p/n 2NC-6250-B) is different than the 4-bolt sidemount camshaft (p/n 8N-6250). How careless of me not to point that out..... ....thank you, Dell

Thanks Dell. I didn't want to keep triing to start a dry engine and cause a problem.
