Octane requirement

Hi Folks. What causes an engine to need higher octane gas as it ages?
My car engine is getting rather musical on hills, and didn't used to be.
I've used lots of different brands to no avail.
I had it "de-carbonized" but no improvement. Checked all sensors, tuned up, mech says everything is good.
I'm still wondering about carbon.
How do I fix it, any ideas?
Thanks!

97 Ford Ranger is doing the same thing after 65,000
miles. Years ago I had the same problem with an 80"s
era Ranger and cured it by advancing the timing a little. Anyone know it that can be done on newer models?

Frankly, I've seen the same thing happen on 3 different cars or trucks, all Fords. As they aged, I needed to move to higher octane fuel to prevent knock. No other symptoms and no problems other than the slight price difference from 87 to 89 octane. Any repair cost would far exceed the gas cost and, after all, that is what higher octane gas is for, so it is an easy fix.

If the EGR system is not working or plugged, the engine will knock easier in the absence of recirculated exhaust gas.
