Well, I spent all day setting up and splitting my '49 8N.
I have never split a tractor before.
Took longer to set it up than to actually split it.
I don't have a garage to work in.
So I just found a flat shady spot in the yard.
First I dug a couple of post holes and put up some 8ft posts.
Then put a header across those to hang a come-along from.
Braced it all up real good and drove the tractor under it.
I had to make a 4wheel dolly to roll the back end on.
And I layed some 2x8s for it roll on.
The rest was done per ya'lls instructions.
Went very smoothly. probably never get it back together.

When I opened the bell housing I found pieces of clutch disk in the bottom.
And it was all soaked in oil. Everything just soaked.
Took the pressure plate off to inspect the flywheel.
It has some wear on it but otherwise looks great.
Them bolts holding the PP on were tighter than 25ft-lbs.
Are ya'll sure that is how tight they go back on there?

Got any tips for putting this thing back together?
Lining it all back up and pushing it together won't be as easy.

One more day like today and I will be finished.
Total time changing a clutch: 2 days.
And most of that was setup for the come-along.
If I had a garage to work in I probably could be done by now.

I wanna thank everybody for the great instructions for doing this.
It made this go a lot easier than if I had to figure it out on my own.

And gosh, I sure am tired after such a long day.

While you have it down, make sure you replace the output shaft seal. Very cheap insurance to protect that new clutch.

I too like the suggestion about using longer bolts. Anything to ease the assembly of the halves will be beneficial.

Both halves of the tractor have to be EXACTLY level and lined up perfectly. If the spline doesn't line up on the clutch pad/pilot bearing perfectly it will bind. I spent most of my time lowering and raising each half trying to find the right combination.

Good luck,
Dan

I found it helped to use some longer bolts (4 or six inches), sort of like dowel pins, to guide it all back together and into proper position when you are reassembling it. Maybe put four of the longer bolts in (top and bottom on each side, then use shorter bolts in the other holes to sort of pull it all together. You'll have to turn the engine over manually a little bit to make sure the splines on the input shaft line up right with the clutch, you'll feel it give a little when that falls into place.

Hey, now that's a good idea.
Have to pick up some longer bolts to use.

I left the starter on the tractor to split it.
But it looks like it will have to be removed before un-splitting it.

I hope a new tranny seal fixes all that oil.
I couldn't believe how much oil was in the bell housing.

Thanks.

Pooh,

Save yourself some aggravation and hit the edges of the splines in the new clutch disk with a small file. Just hit the high spots and the edges where the transmission input shaft goes in. Five minutes of filing will save you many minutes of yanking and pulling trying to get the input shaft inthe disk. If the input shaft has any dings or high spots hit them too. It does make a big difference.

Good idea. I will take a look at that.
Want this to go as smooth as possible.

Thanks.
