Runnin' Again

I recently bought a 1952 8N with side mount distributor which ran great at first, then started missing and got hard starting. While changing out stuff in distributor, I noticed that there was no copper band connecting the points to the terminal on the inside of the distributor. Sometime earlier it must have been replaced with a piece of 14 gauge wire. "Shelly" now starts and runs great again after tuneup. The question is -- Would she do even greater if that wire was replaced with the copper band?
Also, I removed the carburator and tore it down to clean and noticed that the choke was not completely solid. It had partial semicircle opening in it so it would never completely choke the engine. I never saw a choke like this before. Is this the way it is suppose to be?
Thanks in advance from a 8N novice.

Interesting you should ask about the M/S Strangler (everybody else calls it a choke). Just yesterday Rob posted a very clear and detailed photo of the M/S strangler. I'm gonna try and include it in the main message but I'm not as swift with computer tricks as I am with N-Tractor problems; otherwize click on the link.....sigh, old age?

As fer yer points copper strip worry. Has 'nuttin' to do with yer sparkies missing. You found that out by doing an ignition tune-up. Infact, my old '72 Ford pick'em-up had a woven copper strap that grounded the points just like yer replaced 14ga wire does.

I had this problem also. I took the copper band out of the old set of points and cut/drilled a hole in the one end. I works great!

I have some spare Marvel Schebler parts as I rebuild them to sell from time to time. Send me your address and I will send you a new choke plate with the spring and flap attached so you can just remove the two screws on yours and install this one in its place.

I too had to work around this. I went to the store, bought the new points, and tried to explain the copper strip, but they did not understand. I think I used like 14 gauge to bridge it. Next time they need replaced I will be hunting for the original with the extra copper, just for my piece of mind. Probably not needed, but I like everything neat, and not rigged.

I've got a piece of wire in mine (although I think it's 12 guage wire). It works. Will I replace it with the copper (brass?) strip? Maybe... someday.

As to the choke... That opening should be there, however, it should have a spring-loaded cover on it... I doubt that you can buy just the cover... Shoot, I wouldn't even guarantee that you could buy JUST a choke butterfly. Good luck with that...

Your fine, lots of old tractor distributors are set up this way. I think the band is just easier to manuever around. You can still get this band aftermarket if you just want to look right... I cut up a piece of a Skoal can lid for my 48 8N - works just fine :)
