My 1948 tractor 8n Front mount distributor which has been converted to 12 volts, will start SOMETIMES, but will only run for 2 or 3 seconds. Have replaced the coil, carburator, intake/exhaust manifold. Seems to have good compression, spark does not appear correct, looks a little orange. Carburator pouring fuel out of the air intake at times. Checked plugs after trying to choke start, they are not wet at all. Starting fluid no help.

Would you all, which have been so helpful in the past, get me started out on the right foot. So I can get this up and running before I pull all of my grey hair out and even shoot my old cat. Leon in NW Fl.

Don"t forget the ignition switch had the same problem with mine relpaced the gas line and filters thinking it had to be a gas problem with no help. Replaced the ignition switch and it now runs until I turn it off.

You can check the switch by placing a jumper across the switched terminals if it runs replace the switch.

Had mine do that a couple of times. One time was the strainer above the glass bowl filled with crud. You could restart but wouldn't run. The other time, it was the ignition. Jumped the ignition that itme and it ran so easy to diagnose.

Leon..... ..there 4-common runtime issues with the frontmount N-Engine.

1) runs for about 1-min and quits; BAD CONDENSER
sound like yer stated problem? 2) runs for about 5-mins and quits; clogged fuel filters
not yer stated problem
3) runs for about 15-mins and quits; gunked up ignition switch guttz
could be yer problem, causes WEAK SPARKIES $10, (cheap) 4) runs for about 1-hr and quits; restarts next morning; bad ignition coil
NOT yer stated problem

Howsomevers; a few seconds of running time can be caused by WATER in the gas. You doubt? Drain some gas outta yer big carb drainplug into a clear glass jar. Is yer gas clear or cloudy? I once drained 3-1/2 glass jars of cloudy gas outta my hard to run 8N. Dunnno how water got into my gas but I putta can of "gas-dry" and haven't had a problem since.

And change yer current sparkies for NEW sparkies. AutoLite AL-437 are recommended. Heres the deal, modern no-lead gasoline will short out yer sparkies with INVISABLE deposits. And while you can "burn" the deposits off, one at a time, in a runnin' engine, you can't do 4-atta-time while trying to start yer engine..... ..HTH, Dell

Sounds like your main jet in your carb is clogged with rust or dirt, or one of your filters are clogged. Open the big plug at the bottom of your carb with the fuel turned on. It should run steady for over 10 seconds (catch it in a clean bowl to pour back in the tank). If it runs good for 10 seconds, I would pull the carb, clean it, and put a rebuild kit in it. If it runs good for a few seconds, then dribbles or stops all together, you have a clogged filter on your shut-off valve in your gas tank and/or elbow strainer that your fuel line screws into on your carb.

Good luck,
Dan
