Carb rebuild washers....

Well I am narrowing it down! First I would like to give the rasberries to TSC for poor instructions in their Marvel carb rebuild kit and lack of a packing list. Second, in addition to thanking everyone else who has helped me I want to thank Dell for the great carb rebuild link which I have read in it's entirety and for helping me identify half the washers in my kit and rendering an opinion on the other two. The last question I hope I will have on this is regarding the throttle arm packing. It is a small black plastic donut with a groove on one side and the question involves whether the groove should go against the body of the carb or against the throttle arm. If anyone has done a succesful rebuild recently and remembers, I could SURE use to know which. Otherwise I will go with my best judgement...or flip a coin. Thanks again for helping me get this far.

Not sure this is going to help you, but onmy Zenith carb I just rebuilt for my IH cub, it also had the little rubber donut with slot cutout on one side as the throttle shaft packing. The carb had been rebuilt before, and I removed one that looked more or less identical. It was installed grove toward carb.. so that's how i put mine back in. Tractor started on first fire, and I've mowed with it and worked on it since then..?? I may be cackwards.. but it's working..

Since it is trying to seal against anything coming in,the groove should be on the outside. However, I will gladly bow to technical experience and not give a ___t (that's hoot, case anybody's curious) either.

I'm not saying mines right.. My kit had no instructions either.. i just put stuff back like I saw it come out. For all I know the last guy that rebuilt the carb rebuilt it wrong too and I just followed his lead.

There is a small brass disk that pops in on the far side of the throtle shaft, so at least for that side.. if the seal was backwards.. it has some extra 'sealing;. etc.

I tried to think of the donut as an oil seal, and put the groove / lip toward the inside. Like I said.. I may be azz-backwards.. but it's working.

Russ, I was kind of leaning in the direction of SouNdguy because the throttle arm itself is smooth but the body of the carb actually has a little ridge around the hole that seems to match the groove in the packing. I was wondering if you have anything to back up what you are saying or if you are just guessing (for lack of a better word)? No offense intended, I just want to get this right the first time if possible and escape the dreaded carburetor curse that has haunted me my entire life (don't ask).

6er,
Jes going by the way oil seals go. The higher pressure side gets the lips. Thanks to a couple of carbs 3000 miles apart, we proved it really doesn't matter.

It is a "VEE" packing, and the groove and inner and outer lips face OUTWARD, as you are trying to seal air at atomspheric pressure, and dirt from moving past the seal, into the depressed pressure in the carburetor throat.
