I have a problem I'm hoping somebody has an answer to. I did research the archives and can't find were the topic has been brought up, in all the talk on governors.

I went to rebuild the governor, had groves wore on the inside of the housing, everything else on the old one seemed fine, no flaten balls ect. Ordered a new housing from just 8n's, got here quickly I might add. Sat down last night finally to put the new one together and ran into a problem. The in lever arm wont set onto the spindle. The hole in the arm is smaller then the new spindle area. On the old governor it is a tight fight. I checked the sizes with a mic and found that the new spindle is about .03 inches bigger than the old one. So now here I sit scratching my head since I though all the governor housings were the same, Am I wrong, Is the new governor made wrong, is it right and I need to order a new inner arm? I am at a loss righ tnow. I know I need to get it doe this weekend. really need the tractor working to get the horse arena cleaned up. rodeo season has begun and daughter needs the practice, the horse is fine.

Thanks for any help
Michael

I live in the Columbus, Ohio area and own an 8N. I was operating it several weeks ago with a grader blade and the tractor was running great. After approximately 1 hour of running great the tractor would only run at an idle speed. I immediately checked the throttle rod linkage and everything was still hooked together and moving freely. Could one of you gentlemen help me trouble shoot where the problem is. I have checked the air tube for any type of blockage , such as a mouse nest, and everything is clear. I think it has something to do with the governor.

Russell..... ...I'm so glad Michael's governor problem inspired you to ask about what you think is a governor problem inside his post where your post is not likely to be read or answered. This great N-Board does't charge for starting your very own question thread where it would probably get more immediate attention and answers. Be BRAVE, we don't byte. (grin)

And while your problem could be governor related, (its way down on the list of possibles) there are 4-common runtime issues with the 4-nipple squarecan frontmount ignition system. (wheather 6v or 12v, same problem/symptoms)

1) runs for about 1-min and quits; bad condenser
NOT yer stated problem
2) runs for about 5-mins and quits; clogged fuel filters (3of'em)
NOT yer stated problem
3) runs for about 15-mins and quits; gunked up ignition switch guttz
NOT yer stated problem
4) runs for about 1-hr and quits; restarts after 4+hr/overnite cool-off; BAD ignition coil
sound like yer problem?

Heres the deal; unfortunately the squarecan ignition coil is NOT as robust as we'd like'm to be. They are VERY HEAT SENSITIVE. And it takes about 1-hr of runnin' time to heat-up and MELT the insulative tars and short out the coil windings for weak sparkies, hard runnin' and poor re-starting. ...but... amazingly enuff, after cooling for 4+hrs or overnite, the insulative tars solidify and re-insulate the coil windings so it'll make good sparkies for about 'nutter hour and then it'll melt again.

Do I haffta say it? Check yer ignition points gap (0.015") they're known to slip and REPLACE yer weaksister ignition coil..... ..respectfully, Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Michael..... ...ummm? spindle shaft BOSS 30-thou too large? You might check/call with Derick at ust8ns and see iff'n he can "mike" some instock governors cupps for comparison purposes.

Failing that; and with a deadline; (d*amn) would you consider enlarging/reaming yer too small leverarm hole TO FIT? After all, it took 50 years for yer first governor to go bad, second one oughtta last about as long.

Generally, most complaints about governor cupps that I know about is the confusion caused neubies by supplying only the later retro-fittable governor cupp with PROOFMETER boss plugged for non-proofmeter N-Tractors.

While my N-Ford MPC shows there is a different governors cup for 9N/2N's and 8N's. I do believe that the difference is basically the proofmeter boss..... ...Dell, the un-expert

Hi Michael,

Flathead had some good advice and I would also call Don B and seek his advice on what to do. He is a real accommodating fellow.

If I'm understanding correctly the large hole in Part Number 19 in you diagram doesn't fit over the boss on the governer housing. If it were mine and I needed it this weekend I would clean up the hole in the arm with a brake cylinder hone. You should be able to remove 3 thousanths fairly quickly. Just make sure it rotates freely after you clean it up.
