static timing impossible

I must have spent close to three hours tying to static time my frontmount distributor according to the manual with the straight edge 1/4 from the mounting hole. I've done this many times before no problem. I've even got a litle line scratched in with a file 1/4 from hole. No way no how was it lining up. I was in there doing a tune up and all I could think of was Dell saying it's a fifteen minute job on the kitchen table. I had the kitchen table part right. I tried the advance and retarding adjustment bolt. Has absolutely no effect on the position of points opening. Points will open before or after the 1/4 position but not within an inch of the mark. Put it back in and the tractor starts fine but has no power. Tractor ran well prior to messing with distributor, should have left it alone. What should I do next?

Remove the distributor plate and inspect the spark advance.

Ratface, is it possible you had the straight edge on the wrong side of the dist drive shaft? The tangs are offset, sounds like you were 1/2 round off...thanks, Kelly.

thanks guys. Like I said I have done this several times without problems. I have the F0 4 manual and was following the diagram in this post. something has shifted and changed since no amount of advancing or retarding would alter the distance. I did have it apart but guess I should have looked closer at the centrifugul weights. Will go back in and see if something is out of place.
