Well, I've been reading this website for about 8 months and this is my first post. My father owns a 1952 Ford 8N (don't have the serial number with me), and I've been wanting to restore the tractor myself. This particular tractor has been in our family since 1952 and sat not running for about 20 years in a barn in Shelby County, KY. Has most of the original equipment, tool box, caps, tools, etc... It is a sentimental piece of equipment to my father and actually serves as a bridge/bond between us. I am just using it to mow a 5 acre lawn with a Woods 6 foot finishing mower, but I have extreme pride in the tractor. It runs great, little smoke, starts fair, but it is time for an overhaul and fresh paint.
However, due to my unfortunate schedule and lack of experience/knowledge in restoration I opted to have a local gentleman help out with the project. It looks like the project is going to take longer than originally planned. Sound familiar? I really wanted this man to help with the restoration because he has immense knowledge of 8N's and has worked on them for years. He has health problems as well and his grandson is helping him with the main physical labor. He's had the tractor for about 2 months and progress is really slow. I guess you can't rush perfection, but I need it to start mowing again real soon.
Well, I'm sure many of you have been here before. I wish I could have had the time to do the restoration, but, nonetheless, I am very excited and hopeful that the final product will be something we'll keep around another 50+ years.

This is a really great thread.

It was my father and my boyhood that got me back into it. He as long since past, but my best memories of him were on our 8N. He taught me to drive our 8N when I was 8 years old and completely trusted me with it. He was an 'N' fanatic owning one of the first 9Ns in the Ohio Valley... paid for it the first year plowing neighbor's fields.

Now I am in my 40s and own two 8Ns and two Jubilees and my dad's spirit rides with me when I plow, disc and mow my small acreage here in Oregon.

Some of you are lucky enough to have your father's actual 'N'. I wished I could find my dad's. But I am happy knowing he is smiling at me and my Ns.

It's a man thing! Even if we don't admit it... we are a sensitive gender! :-)

Josh, sounds great. Pretty easy solution if your worried about the grass; buy another N! Sound like the perfect reason to me!
Don't know why I have aways wanted an N. Didn't grow up with one etc. It does however remind me of simpler times and I think they may be the best looking tractor ever made.
I am like you; just a grass farmer
Hope we see pics when she's done

What is it about these little tractors that make them so much fun to restore/rebuild? Mine was my father's for 50 years and after he passed away, I felt compelled to rebuild the engine and search out a strange vibration. Well, as many of you can understand, once started I embarked upon a complete restoration.

The engine was suffering from a botched up overhaul and the vibration was the ommision of the pilot bearing by the same incompetent repair shop.

I will never forget the day I did a search on the internet for "Ford 8n" and got back several thousand hits! It is because of the wealth of knowledge available on this board and the amazing engineering of these tractors that I could not stop with simply repairing the engine, I had to continue. I can still hear and see my father returning home after working the fields for countless hours. The memories of the 6 volt lights with their yellowish glow, the sound of the fan pulling in air to cool the tireless engine and my dad's dust caked face are just some of the reasons I spend hours restoring the little 8n to the best of my abilities. How about all you guys, what compells you to spend so much effort on your n's???

Josh
Looking forward to see pictures when it is done. I'm sure the gentleman that is doing it will also take pride in his work and it will be better than new. Good luck. In the mean time, get a few goats, shetland ponies, and if they don't keep the grass down, advertise free camping on your land for a weekend and it will be tromped down. Ha Ha.
