I have an early 8N with a front mount distributor that will not start.
It seems like it is not getting any spark.
I actually have swapped all ignition pieces with a known good 8N. (My dad"s, starts like a P38)
I thought amybe the timing was off, but I have done nothing to the inside of the engine, and the distributor is impossible to install backwards, believe me I have tried.
It just will not install 180 degrees out.
This tractor has always been hard starting.
Also on a side note, no matter what I do it never charged when it was running.

Winny..... ...takes 3-things for an engine to run. Sparkies at the right time. Correct fuel/air mixture. And COMPRESSION; Ford specs: 90psi min (dry). Yer report of "always been hard starter" is indicative of LOW COMPRESSION. All the hottest sparkies in the world won't start a low compression worn-out engine.

Do the dreaded COMPRESSION TEST. Remove all sparkies. Plug in yer compression tester, and cranker 5-puffs min and writer down. Now, squirt about 1-oz of oil down yer sparkie hole and tester again and writter down. Good engine will up the wet compression about 10psi. Worn engine will up the wet compression about 20psi. BADLY WORN engine will up the compression about 30-40psi. BURNED valves NO INCREASE in wet compression.

Iff'n you don't understand these instructions, ask for clarification..... .....respectfully, Dell

Well have you checked for spark by pulling a plug or takeing a good plug and hooking up one of the wire to it and hold it on some metel on the engine?? If not do so you may have a crab problem. Also if you don't get a good blue spark when checking it that way, try a hot wire from the battery to the coil, if you get spark then you have a bad ignition switch or a bad wire going to the coil. If you have a good spark the I'd look at the carb, pull the drain plug with the gas turned on you should get a good flow about like you pissing. If you don't you have a clogged fuel system.
