Help! Guys, My father has a 48 8N that I just keep tryin' to patch up. I think the old girl wants to die, but I just won't let her. I put all new valve guides, and valves in it last year, the year before that I swapped her over to 12 volts, and re-wired her, so I got just a little too much time in her to just let her go.

The newest problem is the right hand steering sector is missing a tooth. This wouldn't be a problem, except my Father lives in a very hilly place with a bluff line at the bottom of the property (1 mile due west of Ferne Clyffe, Steve in Magnolia Texas, and it is BEAUTIFUL). It's only about a 20 ft drop, but that's a long way to fall with an 8N.

Seriously though, he has almost driven off that bluff because of the missing tooth on the sector. Thank God for the tree he got wedged on. I am not in any hurry to lose the 8n, or my hard headed Father who won't quit bush hogging with it. I love both of them too much for that!

Where oh where can I find one for an early '48 8N with the four bolt cover. I would prefer a good used one, but beggars can't be choosers. Whatever it costs, he'll kick my tail, but we gotta have one. He get's mad when I spend money on him, but he took care of me for 36 years so far, so I think I owe him a little ;). If it were a late 48, and up you can find them a dime a dozen, but I haven't seen a single early one yet.

Thanks for your time, and thanks in advance! Brent

Your local New Holland (was Ford) tractor dealer can still get the early steering gears.

Maybe replace the whole steering box. I think these are replaceable with any year. Kinda expensive but how much is your Dad's safety worth?

Thanks Steve, but that"s the thing, will it work? Dad"s is the only 8N I"ve been around, so I"m kinda fumbling in the dark on this one.

Can I "upgrade" to a newer steering system?

Lookin fer hen's teeth in reply to Brent Horn, 05-16-2005 18:59:38
Brent,
Not too many around, which you probably already know. You could post a "wanted" ad in the classifieds, call (or email) Don B. or John Smith. Yer lookin fer P/N 8N3526-A or P/N 8N3554-A. First number is the nekked sector shaft (with gear) and the second includes nut and some other dressing. There's one in a tree somewhere; just gotta shake the right one.
Russ
