Latest on rebuilt engine: After much blood, sweat and tears(remember I'm new to this), I finally got my 2N (8N block, professionally rebuilt engine, starter, generator, carb, etc) running today. Great to finally hear what it sounds like, but now for the problem. Smoked quite a bit (blue-white), which I don't think is so unusual for a new engine, especially since I squirted a bit of oil in the spark plug holes (as Zane suggested). The big question is about oil pressure. My gauge is reading zero! (New gauge) Should the pressure instantly register, or does it take a few seconds to build up? I only ran it 3 times for approx 5-10 seconds each time, for fear of causing damage. Am I missing something? Should I let it run for a little longer to build up pressure? I have a sneaking suspicion that when I reassembled the engine, I may have forgotten to completely tighten one of the 3 screws holding the oil filter together. Please tell me that I don't have to split again! Any ideas would be appreciated.

Usually the pump is filled with white assembly lube to enable a good prime before drawing up the crankcase oil. You might remove the pressure regulating nut, spring, and plunger, then use an oil squirt can and fill the hole with about 10oz or so of crankcase oil. Replace everything and crank 'er again. Tell us how it goes. Hopefully it will keep its prime.

Sorry, I did mean oil pump, not filter (brain cramp). I did pack the pump with lube prior to reassembly, as per Bill's rebuild chronicle which was a great help. Anyways, I'm going to try priming through the relief valve opening as well as checking the fittings for oil presence today, and report back. I'm so close, I can smell it. Thanks everybody, Rick

What size main bearings were installed? That is where oil pressure is made. If the crank was worked on they should be oversized bearings to make up the difference in size. If stock bearings were installed on a rebuild, you could have trouble there. This is worst case, hope it is just the pump priming.

All I can tell you is that my 8n shows oil pressure almost immediately when starting. Could the new guage be faulty? (Hope so) When you talk about forgetting to tighten a screw on the oil filter, do you mean the oil pump? I personally would expect the pump to produce pressure with two of the three screws tight, though that would still require corrective action. I am just saying that there may be oil pressure but it is not reading on the guage. Try loosening the fittings along the way and you will at least see if you have oil flowing. If there is no oil flow then you will have to troubleshoot without running the engine. I would try the old guage if it was replaced because of cosmetics if you have oil flowing in the lines. I am sure you will get other replies so I will stop here.

Hang in there Rick, sounds like you are real close! I hope Zane does not mind me linking you to one of his responses where he suggests priming through the hole where the oil pressure relief valve is. Hope this helps.

May have to just prime oil pump. Never done it myself, but check the archives, it's been discussed before.

Good gosh don't run till ya fix it.
