Ran across an 8n the other day with the Hupp aux tranny, plus the Howard underdrive. My 8n doesn't have either and works just fine. Why do I want this other one? Wife says no anyway! Need advice about the tractor, not about the wife!

Hupp will function similar to a sherman. It's a pre-tranny.. The Howard was a gear reduction unit for the howard rotavator ( tiller ) attachment. it lowered ground speed, but did not lower pto speed. ( It's mroe similar to an everet trencher tranny, than any of the pre-tranies that lower or raise ground speed AND pto speed. etc. )

Thanks for the information. I think I will buy it and hide it behind the shop. Just have to make sure I don"t park the 2 n"s side by side. The guy that owns it couldn"t get it to run a five-foot brush hog very well. Sounds like either a tired engine or the Hupp was in high gear. I"ll find out tomorrow. Should there be any extra gear noise or anything else to look out for? Rusty

I find that pre-trannies tend to add some gear noise, especially in overdrive.

The howard is surprisingly a very small set of parts.. and I wouldn't look to hear anything from it.. if you did.. I'd think there was a major problem.. etc.

Test the haoward to see if it engages, etc. In fact.. drive in all ranges, and speeds.. etc.

If you do get it, just remember that the Howard is only there to slow the ground speed. DO NOT attempt to pull with it it is not a granny gear. That is the reason that Howards are reffered to as fragile. Folks tried to use them as a granny gear and tore them up. Parts are no longer available.
