Heading to TSC tonight to get oil for the 2N and hopefully they sell a filter (?) for it too. Then I was going to see if I had any hope for the smoking to abate enough that I could drive it and not asphyxiate. Went out today to see if she would start or if the battery would need to be charged. Put the ground on the battery (previous owner said to take it off when not in use), turned the key, pulled the choke, hit the starter and it did absolutely nothing. NEVER had that happen before. Battery has enough juice to at least roll her over. Do I "suddenly" have a bad connection here? 6 volt positive ground. Gotta love this tractor. I wanted to work on electrical next but decided the smoke issue was more important....tractor disagrees.

From your description, I assume you haven't had this tractor very long, and if that's the case then the very first thing I would suggest doing is change the oil, then do the compression test. No telling how long the old oil has been in there, what grade it is, what additives may be in it etc. When I got my tractor the old oil was thin and dirty, and all sorts of alarming stuff like old gasket material and chunks of unidentifiable debris came out with it. I've been using 40wt in it since then (over 3 years now), and the blow-by has stopped. (Now the oil just leaks out the rear main seal, out the bellhousing and onto the driveway). If your rings and/or valves are real badly worn then, like Bruce said, it won't fix the problem but it may make it tolerable enough for you to use your tractor until you decide to rebuild.

Just came in from cutting the grass. Yup, I finally got one of my three tractors in shape to do it! You're right, I have not had the tractor long. Didn't want it in the first place! Wanted C*A*S*H but the guy around the corner never mentioned he had no money until after I finished all the work he hired me to do...so I now own a 2N and I am actually happy to have the cute little thing. Gives me a project. Oh boy, does it give me a project. I like your idea and others have told me the same thing. If I can get it down to "light" smoke then I can postpone the eventual rebuild until I have a few other matters cleared up. Like the electrical.....

Tractor wiring is not like wine; it does not get better with age. I wish I could provide you with the number of posts I made to this board 2 years ago when I got my 51 N complete w/ the originial wiring. First, it would charge.....then it would just cut off.....etc, etc. What finally convinced me to re-wire it was when I just touched the coil & the secondary wire fell off. For less than $100, I got a repro harness, switch, terminal block.....all of it. Now, no more problems. Sometimes you just gotta spend the money! Of course, you still have to keep all the connections clean, bright & tight. As to the oil smoke problem, well, changing the oil isn't going to help. It is smoking for one of two likely reasons; worn rings, valves or both. (Yea, could be other things, but those two are the usual suspects) Get the compression guage out & do a compression check. Hot engine, remove the plugs, take the breather off, minimum 5 puffs per cylinder or until the guage doesn't go any higher. Minimum reading, 90 psi w/ no more than 10 lbs variance between cylinders. Then, put a couple of tablespoons of oil in each cylinder & do it again. If it increases 10+ lbs, its rings; no increase, valves.

Well Bruce, I WANTED to do the harness next but then it started to smoke and now I feel like it would be a whole lot nicer to work on if it didn't gas the place out every time I ran it. Now I can't do my compression test 'cause the old girl won't run. Seems like an awful sudden change that it won't even click when I hit the starter.

Fram C3(P) is the filter that my TSC carries for the N's. I'd recommend 6 qts of HD40 (or even ND40, for now).

As to your starting problem... make sure that the spot you've got your ground cable connected to is clean and tight, both on the casting and on the battery.

You could always try a jump start just remember to jump DIRECTLY across the starter (polarity doesn't matter, so negative cable to ground on the chassis and positive to the starter post), after, of course, making sure that it's in neutral.

Good luck...

Steve

I believer the advice to jump directly across the starter is not good advice. IF you do thay you'll be by-passing the safety feature of the nuetral start switch interlock and you can run yourself over with your tractor and your wife will find you very badly mangled if not dead. Don't do that to her. If you want to jump it, jump it directly to the battery using the correct polarity...or if you insist on jumping it to the starter...hook it to the starter and then stand a long way off and connect the other end of the jumper cables to the good battery while you're AWAY from your tractor.

Thanks for the name of the filter, that will save me some time tonight trying to explain to the teenager what a 2N is so I can get a filter. I'm gonna pass on jumping it for now. There has to be something not hooked up or a bad switch or something. The battery is good.
