OK guys. Hang in just a little longer! I have followed your collective advice and wisdom and have: cleaned oil filter; placed a wire with alligator clips on terminal posts of ignition switch; JB Welded the mysterious second hole on the bottom of my carburetor (no more leak!) and changed my fuel filter (it wasn't pretty and looked like it had been gathering rust). Heck I even put in new gas, dry gas and tightened my fan belt which was way too loose! Still, the tractor will run for only 5 minutes or so before conking out. I checked the linkage around the governor which had gotten pretty gunky after plowing and brushhogging and there seemed to be some play in the levers. I then manipulated the throttle by hand-- really revving it up-- and the engine seemed to go great for 5 or so minutes before dying out again.
Have I narrowed the list of possible problems? Although the fuel filter looked pretty rusty, the fuel in the fuel bowl is crystal clear so I do not think I have a fuel problem. Is it the play in the linkage of the governor? The only two theories I have not run to ground yet (because they are the hardest to do) are checking the float in the carburetor or looking at the points. Could these be a problem, however, if the engine runs good for a few minutes and then just quits? I also got a pretty good backfire when I tried to save the engine from dying the last time by manipulating the throttle linkage with my hand. The last thing I will say is that the fuel adjustment screw on the carburetor was way out-- three full turns from its seat-- when I checked the setting. I have tried resetting it only a turn from the seat as recommended in the manual but this doesn't seem to make a difference.

And remember, the tractor ran great when I got it a month or so ago and only started acting up after some pretty intense and dirty plowing and brushhogging.

Hoping to get back on the tractor soon!

Bob. Sounds like you have beat the gas supply problem to"whatever?" I just got back on line from Turkey hunting, and you may have prior posts. However, I would clean all you electrical connections between the battery and coil clean and bright. At the same time install a new set of points and condenser and make sure they are set to factory specs. I think you will like the results. By the way if it is a gas supply problem that you by chance haven't checked, the tractor will run for about 5 min. on the gas in the carb. Good luck. Ron

Thanks guys. I'll tackle these suggestions tomorrow a.m. with renewed optimism and (hopefully) more luck. Two follow-ups: I think I am missing the filter in the carb elbow if by elbow you mean the elbow shaped bracket that screws into the top of the carb and connects to the fuel filter. When I screw the elbow out, there is nothing there in any event. Could this be the source of my woes? Second, do I drain the carb when the engine is off or running? A stupid question, I'm sure, but I'm just trying to be careful.

Turn the tractor off to drain the gas; or to fuel the tractor or anytime you are handling fuel.

The fuel line at the carb goes into an elbow that"s screwed into the carb. It has a screen that sometimes detaches and remains in the carb when the elbow is removed. Fish it out?

5-minutes and quits is strong indicator the carb is running dry. There are 3 fuel filters.
One in the elbow on the fuel line at the carb. One atop the sediment bowl in the tank valve. One up sitting atop the tank valve up in the tank.
Screwy carb adjustments that are way off or don"t do nothing at all is a strong indicator the carb needs torn down and cleaned up. Minimum kit w/gaskets and seals is $15 or $20 bucks at farm/ranch stores, CNH, and internet.
Taking down the carb and carefully cleaning and setting up can do the old horse a world of good and eliminate more than a couple frustrating "issues" you might otherwise have with your tractor today or another.

bob,
I don't recall seeing the folowing suggestions. My apologies if you've already been there.
Git a clean peanut butter jar or something that will hold about a quart. Pull the plug on the bottom of your carb and see if the fuel continues in a steady flow once the carb bowl is empty. The other is try loosening your gas tank cap when it stutters. Possibility the tank vent got plugged hoggin. Most fuel caps are too old to hold a vacuum, but there have been several posts on this problem.

Is it overheating ? 5 minutes is rather short so I ruled it out;
Electrical problem :
Ignition timing : steady and OK ?
Checked Dwell angle ?
Paper Capacitor ? Intermitting short on Ignition coil ?
Low voltage wiring; Intermitting short somewhere ?
[isolate charging system, by-pass existing wiring, use only voltage from battery and direct wiring to ignition, no ignition switch, no charging for test purpose only]
If trouble is still there, I would work on fuel system.
Try to by-pass the governor, have a direct linkage with the carburetor.
Good luck, Rlach
