Frozen 8n

My '52 8n appears to be frozen up. Here's how it happened: I was plowing our small garden, not working things very hard. After about 10 minutes, my 5 year old started yelling at me, so I finished my furrow, and turned the tractor off so that I could hear him. When I went to restart it I got 'click'. I figure no problem, I'll point it down hill and roll start it. I only made skid marks on the lawn in third gear, and I can't even budge it in 4th (forward or reverse).
Fluids all appear ok - less than 5 hours on new oil, no sign of water or gas on the dipstick.

I realize there are a myriad of possiblities here(none of them cheap, I'd guess), but does anyone have any idea where to start looking for the problem? Has anyone had one just decide to sieze up like this?

Bob's advice was right on - the problem was a stuck bendix drive, however in the process of getting it unstuck, I managed to split the pinion gear, so now I guess I need to retrieve the pieces before they cause any damage.
Any helpful advice?

Like Bob said leave them in the hole, new drive is about $35.00. I checked yahoo maps, you are not to far from here, drop a line, maybe we can meet sometime.

Yup. Leave em be. You"ll have one of thousands of tractors with starter pieces laying down there. You could try to pull them up enough with a magnet so you could grab them, but that would be tedious at best.

Likely, the starter drive is jammed into the flywheel ring gear... this is COMMON. (Be SURE the ignition is "OFF" before continuing!!!) Put it in 4TH gear and rock it (get help) BACKWARDS until the starter releases.

If this doesn't work, at the least you will have to loosen the starter mounting bolts and try rocking it again. If that still doesn't work, you will have to remove the starter.
