Hello again,

Thought I should post this as a different questions from my first about the backhoe. I just bought a 51 8N, and I am now looking for a front end loader for it. Does anyone have any thoughts about what is the best front loader for the 8n?

I don't really like the idea of the older loaders that wrap pipes all around the driver making you have to climb on from the back (is that the deerborne?)and I would like to be able to put a set of forks on as well as the bucket and have a hydraulic actuated bucket. I hear alot about the wagner, but I assume there are multiple models of it as well.

I like the looks of this one:

Thanks for any information!

Darren

Not sure of your location but this 8N loader on Ebay with 5 days left.

If you have the ability to make brackets, most farm equipment dealers usually have an old loader laying around. Just check.

Darren,

The nicest fitting, best looking, most modern looking used loader you're likely to find for an "N" is a Davis, 100 series, I believe. I have one on an 8N and LOVE it, despite what all the naysayers say.

This link is to another model, the "skyline". It's similar, but apparently higher lift.

Darren..... ....the "only" new modern Front End Loader (FEL) is made by "Paulson". It is designed for using the weaksister internal hydraulic pump. But you can also devise a front engine pulley operated hydraulic pump scheme like used on the older Dearborns and Waggoners jungle-gym pipeloaders. Remember, FEL's are power-UP and gravity down. There is NO down-force.

Suggest you consider a rear 3-point "scoop". It is bi-mountable. Drive foward and scoop ...or... back-into and scoop. Can haul +500# and the 36" wide costs about $250 new. Really quite handy, except you can't load a pick'em-up..... ..Dell

If that's a newer loader on that picture, I can imagine it being more difficult to find. I'm not real up to speed on tractors in general, so this may be a stupid question. When someone has a newer loader like that on an older tractor, have they done some considerable alterations to the loader/tractor to make it work, or are loaders built in such a way that they are relatively universal (meaning you don't need an enginerring degree to adapt it) between similar sized tractors of different ages?

Thanks for all the great replies so far as well!

Darren

That loader looks like a more modern version to me. Most of the loaders I have seen of the era of our tractors are not quite so well thought out or heavily built.

I have a Freeman FEL on my 8N but it doesn't have 2way power to the jacks or any to bucket. Gravity on those parts but it is the easiest version of FEL I have seen to get off and on the seat from.

Darren,
Pic looks like a Ford Model 19-117 loader.
ANY loader is gonna put stresses on the N tractor that it wasn't designed for. As souNdguy said, light loader and small bites.
Whatever you choose, be aware that many, if not most, loaders have become separated from their mounting kits. Lots of loaders for sale. Very few with the kits to mount one to YOUR tractor.

With regard to the loaders and mounts, is there an online resource that lists what all parts should be there, or would I need to get a manual for the loader to find that info? Any companies offering aftermark replacement mounts if I find a good loader?

Regarding the stress on the 8n, I just have a few acres, and won't be using it for anything super heavy. I just want the convenience of it, and I am more than willing to take "small bites" to make sure I don't screw up my tractor. I've wanted one for so long, the last thing I want to do is mess it up! :)

Thanks,

Darren

If you find a loader that has no brackets, then you need to get a reasonable idea of what the brackets look like and where they attach. Try to download some pics.. or go tractor looking. Once you know what the brackets look like and where they attach, your local welding supply shop and metal supply yard will have your custom made set of brackets waiting for you! All you have to do is bring home the bulk pieces and 'cut-out' the proper sizes and shapes! and you are set (grin)

Haha.. yeah the metal yard has everything you would ever want.. all you have to do it cut it out and assemble it. Luckily I have a client that fabricates agricultural machinery, along with a variety of other metal products, and they farm, so they should be able to help me out if I need a bracket... now I just need to find a loader.

My idea of a good FEl for an N, is a light duty one. The lighter the better.. keep that stress of fthat front axle. Besides.. a loader on a 2wd, no power steering, simple hyd setup like an N is pretty not much more than a 'powered' wheel barrow. Course.. that powered wheel barrow comes in way handy sometimes!

I've got a 722 1-arm laoder on my 660 and just love it.. very easy egress from the tractor.

Darren, The pipe loader Dearborn (mod 19-21) on my 52 8N is a devil to climb into because it is so narrow at the axles. The Wagner (mod Ford WM-3) on my 51 8N is a lot easier to get up on because it is wider at the axles. I too like the loader on the photo you showed but they are few and far between. Good luck in your search
