know I'm close now!! Is it the resistor or "something inside" the distributor if the only way a 2N with new points, condensor, plugs, and wires will start is jumping from the solenoid to the coil?

Thanks for the advice. The wire going to the coil looks "less than perfect" including the connection at the coil. I will try that and work backwards.

If you can jump from the battery 'hot' side of the starter switch ( not solenoid.. 2n's came with a switch, OEM ), then could be the wires to/from the start switch. the resistor, or the wire to the coil. Jump around a few different places to nail it down. Open resistors and switches would be most common.. however extremely dirty contacts, frayed wires and the like will cause similar problems.

Sounds like you may have a bad ignition switch. Check it by putting a jumper wire across it and seeing if you have spark then. A bad ignition switch is a common problem on these tractors.

Could be the residiter or the wiring harness and/or terminations. Look at the stuff you are jumping out, not the distributor. You aren"t jumping out the stuff inside the distributor.
Clean, shiny and bright (including the terminals on the resistor block) and replace all damaged or corroded wires.
